iFixit opens up new Mac Mini, has no trouble putting it all back together again

Image

iFixit's been on something of an Apple tear lately -- just a day after ripping into the barely-repairable new 13-inch MacBook Pro (not to mention the new nano and touch), the site has gotten its hands on -- and into -- the new Mac Mini. Unlike like the shiny new notebook, however, the diminutive desktop was apparently a pleasure to open up and put back together again, scoring an eight out of 10 on the repairability front and altogether forgoing the site's use of adorable kittens. The Mini gets good marks for upgradable RAM and drives and a general lack of glue and proprietary screws. Click on through the source link below to see the Intel 2.5 GHz dual-core i5 in all its glory.

Strengthening fragile forests of carbon nanotubes for new MEMS applications

Strengthening fragile forests of carbon nanotubes for new MEMS applications [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 26-Oct-2012

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are incredibly tiny devices, often built on the scale of millionths of a meter. Conventional MEMS structures tend to be made out of silicon-based materials familiar to the micro-electronics industry, but this ignores a suite of useful materials such as other semiconductors, ceramics, and metals. By using a variety of materials not commonly associated with MEMS technology, a team from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah has created stronger microstructures that can form precise, tall and narrow 3-D shapes characteristics that were never before possible in MEMS. The researchers will present their latest findings at the AVS 59th International Symposium and Exhibition, held Oct. 28 Nov. 2, in Tampa, Fla.

To break the MEMS materials barrier, the researchers devised a new production process called carbon nanotube templated microfabrication (CNT-M). It uses patterned, vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays called forests as a 3-D microfabrication scaffold. With this scaffold, the researchers can create precise, tall and fine-featured microstructures. But the forests are extremely fragile. To make them hardier the team replaced the air spaces between the carbon nanotubes with a filler material by atomistic deposition.

The team has used their new CNT-M framework to fabricate metal components from tungsten, molybdenum and nickel. These metals provide desirable properties for MEMS applications and components, including high electrical and thermal conductivity, high melting temperatures, resistance to corrosion, low thermal expansion and hardness.

The BYU team's advances open the door for manipulating matter in novel ways that optimize efficiency, performance and cost across a range of fields, including medicine, imaging, computing, materials synthesis, chemical synthesis, and printing. Most biological and biomedical processes occur at the nanoscale. Developing models and templates at this scale enables scientists to interact with, control and leverage the unusual physical, chemical, mechanical, and optical properties of materials in naturally tiny systems.

Already, the BYU researchers have successfully used their new technique to make chemical detection devices that can validate chemical reactions during pharmaceutical production. Team member Robert C. Davis, PhD , imagines that one day CNT-M might even play a role in devising new longer-lasting batteries.

TSA Lets Sickly Taiwan-Bound Cat Loose In JFK Airport ? The ...

Xiaohwa is a pretty ordinary 4-year-old tabby who lives in Queens. Her owner had to temporarily move back to Taiwan to care for her ailing father, and misses her cat, so a friend traveling there agreed to bring Xiaohwa along. Their flight took off a week ago, but there was no cat on it. During a TSA check, she escaped from her carrier. Now she?s been on her own at New York?s John F. Kennedy Airport for seven days.

Xiaohwa is physically frail. She has a weakened immune system due to feline immunodeficiency virus, and her owner was advised to put her to sleep after a difficult kitten birth a few years ago.

In a statement, the TSA told the New York Times:

T.S.A. officers screened the pet and its carrier properly. It is unfortunate that the pet is missing at the airport. But, as a reminder, passengers are responsible for their pets throughout the screening process.

A year ago, Jack the cat fell through the ceiling 61 days after American Airlines baggage handlers let his crate fall open at JFK airport. The extended period without food took too much of a toll, and he was euthanized. The Facebook group organized to get word out about his cause is still active, now posting bulletins about other pets missing in airports in the hope that they won?t suffer the same fate.

Romney on economy: Obama 'made the problem worse'

AMES, Iowa (AP) ? Seizing on fresh evidence of economic sluggishness, Republican challenger Mitt Romney said Friday that President Barack Obama inherited a bad situation when he took office and then "made the problem worse." Obama campaigned from the White House 11 days before the election after a wearying, 40-hour circuit of battleground states.

Romney was unsparing in his criticism of the man he hopes to unseat. "Despite all that he inherited, President Obama did not repair our economy, he did not save Medicare and Social Security, he did not tame the spending and borrowing, he did not reach across the aisle to bring us together," the former Massachusetts governor said.

"Four years ago, America voted for a post-partisan president, but they have seen the most political of presidents, and a Washington in gridlock because of it," he added.

The Republican challenger borrowed a theme from Obama's successful 2008 campaign, saying he and running mate Paul Ryan "can bring real change to this country." And he tweaked a line that former President Bill Clinton unveiled at this summer's Democratic National Convention, saying, "This is not the time to double-down on trickle-down government policies that have failed us."

Democrats delighted in pointing out that Romney spoke outside Kinzler Construction Services, which benefitted from more than $650,000 in stimulus funding from the 2009 package Obama that signed into law ? and the Republican nominee often criticizes.

Romney campaigned in Iowa and Ohio as national polls showed a tight race. Though his aides claimed momentum, citing recent polls, Obama's team said the president led or was tied in each of the nine battleground states where the two sides have concentrated hundreds of millions of dollars in television commercials over the past five months.

Back in the White House after his long day and night and day of campaigning, Obama said he looked forward to trying to reach a deal with congressional Republicans on a sweeping budget deal if he wins re-election. Asked by radio show host Michael Smerconish if he would make the first move, the president replied, "I've said I'll do whatever's required to get this done.

"And I think the key that the American people want right now is for us to tackle some big challenges that we face in a commonsense, balanced, sensible way." That was a reference to one of his biggest differences with Romney ? his insistence that tax cuts be allowed to expire at upper incomes on Dec. 31, as opposed to Romney's insistence that they be extended.

Obama has been under pressure from Romney in recent days to be more specific about a second-term agenda, and he released a 20-page pamphlet earlier this week. He also had interviews with MTV and several battleground-state television stations on his schedule for the day.

The two sides disagreed ? of course ? on whether the political battlefield was expanding.

First Romney, then Obama, launched a modest run of television ads in Minnesota, where neither side had made a significant effort to date. The Republican's aides claimed an opportunity to make a state competitive that had long been counted as safe for Obama. The president's side disputed that, insisting that its ads were aimed at voters in Wisconsin, the battleground next door.

Obama's strategists appeared concerned about the impact of Romney's persistent attacks on the president's position on Israel, airing a commercial in the West Palm Beach, Fla., area, home to a large number of Jewish voters. "As long as I'm president of the United States, Iran will not get a nuclear weapon," the president vows in the ad, addressing fears that Tehran would attempt to obliterate the Jewish state.

The ad's subject matter, foreign policy, was a rarity in a campaign for the White House focused largely on the economy and jobs.

Romney vows to put his experience as a businessman to use to create 12 million jobs in four years in a country where unemployment only recently fell below 8 percent for the first time since Obama took office. The president claims progress during his term on fixing the economy, though conceding it hasn't been fast enough, and says Romney's policies would only make matters worse.

There was little indication that the economy was gathering much momentum, based on a Commerce Department report during the day, which said growth from July through September was slightly faster than a 2 percent annual rate. Growth so far this year is slightly less than in 2011, which was weaker than 2010. Officials said the current annual rate is too slow to bring a rapid boost in job creation.

Not all economy-related soundings were negative.

A prominent measure of consumer confidence, calculated by the University of Michigan, rose to its highest level since September 2007, three months before the nation's economy cratered and the credit system virtually shut down.

Romney's aides billed his remarks as a speech about the economy although it was more political than that.

"Four years ago, candidate Obama spoke to the scale of the times. Today, he shrinks from it, trying instead to distract our attention from the biggest issues to the smallest, from characters on Sesame Street and silly word games to misdirected personal attacks he knows are false," he said.

"And then, where are the jobs? Where are the 9 million more jobs that President Obama promised his stimulus would have created by now? They are in China, Mexico, Canada" and elsewhere, he said.

The Republican's statement that it was no time to "double down on trickle down government policies" was eerily like Clinton's criticism at the Democratic convention. "We simply cannot afford to give the reins of government to someone who will double down on trickle down," the former president said, referring to policies he said Republicans had tried in the past with poor results.

The Romney campaign moved swiftly to try to lay one controversy to rest.

Former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu suggested in an interview on Thursday that retired Secretary of State Colin Powell had endorsed Obama because both are black. Sununu later issued a statement that said, "I do not doubt that it was based on anything but his support of the president's policies."

DMCA update shuts down new phone unlocking next year, allows rooting (but not for tablets)

CyanogenMod adds 'pull' OTA updates to latest CM10 nightly builds

And so it passed that Congress didst layeth its blessing on the jailbreaking and rooting of all manner of devices; the hacking community saw the miracle and rejoiced. But that amendment to the DMCA two years ago was just a temporary exemption and the Electronic Frontier Foundation has been vigorously lobbying to get it reinstated. The Library of Congress has now done just that through a new three year extension, but with some serious caveats: After 90 days, unlocking of new phones will be verboten and all tablet mods will still be illegal. This differs from the 2010 decision which did allow unlocking, because the Librarian decided that a recent copyright ruling means fair use rules no longer apply to a handset's OS. It also said the exception isn't needed anymore because carrier rules regarding unlocking are now more liberal -- although the lawmaker may be confounding chicken with egg by that reasoning.

Digital Storm Bolt stuffs full-power graphics into a mini gaming desktop, stretches laws of physics

Digital Storm Bolt stuffs fullpower graphics into a mini gaming PC

Attempts to create truly small gaming desktops usually involve at least some kind of performance hit. Even HP's category-bending Firebird, one of the few stand-out examples, had to use toned-down graphics to succeed in a tiny enclosure. Digital Storm might have broken the trend towards sacrifice with its new Bolt desktop: although it's just 3.6 inches wide and 14 inches tall, the Bolt can cram in as much as a GeForce GTX 680 and will even let gamers upgrade the graphics like they would in a full-size PC. The seemingly logic-defying (if also finger-defying) case still allows room for as much as an overclocked 4.6GHz Core i7, 16GB of RAM and storage options that meld a spinning hard drive with up to two SSDs and a DVD burner. Digital Storm isn't even setting an absurd base price, but it's in the cost that we finally see the catch to the miniaturization tricks. The $999 entry-level Bolt carries a modest 3.1GHz Core i3, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and GeForce GTX 650 Ti, while it takes a staggering $1,949 to get a fully decked-out Core i7 system with a GTX 680. Those prices might be worthwhile for anyone who has ever strained while lugging a traditional tower to a game tourney.

LG Spectrum 2 outed on Best Buy website

Android Central

The original LG Spectrum on Verizon wasn't exactly a blockbuster, but was an important mid-range staple nonetheless. Verizon looks to be following it up with a second iteration, as a Best Buy page has just gone live spilling the beans on the device. The Spectrum 2 will have a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4.7-inch 720x1280 display, 8MP/1.3MP cameras, MicroSD card slot and of course LTE.

The Spectrum 2 really looks to be a bit of a mash-up between the original Spectrum and the Optimus G that we've seen as of late, bringing design cues and specs from each. The price listed on Best Buy is at $649 unsubsidized -- which isn't surprising -- but what will really be interesting is how Verizon prices this with a 2-year commitment.

GraphDive Analyzes Social Data to Help ... - Small Business Trends

Online businesses are constantly looking for new ways to make content more personal and relevant to users in their target market. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter hold so much data about their users, but all of this data can seem overwhelming and nearly impossible to translate into anything useful for a business. This is the main issue that social data startup GraphDive plans to help businesses of all sizes attempt to solve. This week, the platform opened to users on an invite-only basis.

GraphDive specializes in giving online businesses actionable insights on users in their network with its Social API. Businesses in industries such as e-commerce, media, and travel can use the tool to learn about ranked user interests, demographic data, and personalized user recommendations.

?Businesses small and large have an urgent need to present their users with more relevant and personalized content and products. They want to make sure that every offer is tailored for the specific needs of each user. We help them achieve that pressing goal with GraphDive?s simple API that leverages Facebook Connect data and sifts through all the noise of your Facebook chatter to discover who each user really is,? said GraphDive CEO Shahram Seyedin-Noor. ?This problem is even more acute for smaller businesses that lack the engineering resources of the big players.?

GraphDive, which was founded in 2011, has been developing its platform over the past two years to analyze and draw inferences from data found on a number of social networks including Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. In addition to the platform opening for invited users this week, GraphDive also announced its receipt of $1 million in funding from Crosslink Capital, Correlation Ventures, and top angel investors.

There are other companies with solutions to help businesses decipher data about their social media networks, but GraphDive?s offering isn?t meant to just help a company learn about those who follow them on Twitter or Facebook. The technology utilizes Facebook Connect, so users of the website itself can login with their Facebook accounts. This means that the tool can learn about all users of the site and not just those who choose to connect with brands on social media. Those looking to use the platform can request an invite on GraphDive?s Website.

?Our focus has been on solving hard problems that deliver immense value to online businesses and their users through increased personalization and relevance,? said Seyedin-Noor.

Obama?s Last-Minute Bet

154029011 President Obama has to hope voters are feeling the effects of an economic recovery

Is President Obama running on the economy rather than running away from it? For months, the Obama campaign never let more than a second elapse between a boast about the economy?s progress and a declaration that they understood more work needed to be done. They didn?t want anyone to think for a moment that they didn?t know people were still hurting. The president and his team didn?t want to look out of touch. They knew that no matter what the numbers might say, people were not feeling better.

Now though, it appears there may be a subtle shift. With just three weeks before Election Day, the Obama campaign is making a bet that people are feeling better about the economy. In a new Obama ad released Monday, voters talk about the improved economy?a plant that added another shift, a store parking lot filled with customers. At the end, a guy with a buzz cut says, "Stick with this guy." Remember how much trouble the president got himself into for saying, ?The private sector is doing fine?? The Obama campaign still isn?t saying that. The economy is nothing to be boastful about. But Obama strategists are taking a gamble that people are optimistic enough about the future that they might not want to?blow it by changing presidents.

Heading into the second debate, President Obama must pay careful attention to Mitt Romney. He must fact-check him, point out the fuzzy math behind his bold claims, and paint him as a stealth conservative. He?s got to stop his gains with women voters. But the president?s primary goal is still selling himself. He needs to offer voters some reason to stay with him. For months the Obama campaign has been trying to disqualify Mitt Romney. It worked through the spring and summer. More people had an unfavorable than favorable view of the Republican nominee. Now that ground has been lost. Voters have essentially the same slightly favorable view of both men. That puts Romney in a strong position with swing voters who supported Obama in 2008 but are ready to leave him. The Romney campaign has always been gunning for this group, knowing they could be swayed up until the end of the race. The president can?t just frighten those voters back into the fold; he?s got to make the case for why they should ?stick with this guy.?

?We?re on a roll,? says one Obama senior adviser, encapsulating the message. ?We?re in the middle of a huge recovery,? said Michelle Obama recently. It?s risky. The Obama team can?t spin people into thinking that the economy is getting better. At this late hour, people either feel it or they don?t. If the Obama campaign is making the wrong bet, the argument for four more years will fall on deaf ears. What gives the Obama team some encouragement is not only that the unemployment rate is below 8 percent but that polling suggests people are slightly more optimistic. A Washington Post poll today showed 42 percent say the country is on the right track. That's the highest percentage in three years. It?s hardly ?Happy Days Are Here Again.? But then again, George Bush was re-elected with the same level of tepid optimism.

In the first debate, Romney dunked on Obama repeatedly and the president didn?t do much to stop him. Obama didn?t play much offense either. The president doesn?t have an easily digestible five-point plan voters can look at to give them a peek at what the future will hold. But by arguing that the positions he took in the past are paying off, he can talk with passion about what he has accomplished, which solves one of his biggest problems from the first debate. When he talks about the fights he has already won, Obama has a chance to show voters that he?ll be that passionate in the future, too.

The town hall format will be unpredictable for both candidates. Both are trying to do two things: criticize their opponent while not appearing so aggressive that they turn off voters. That would be difficult in any debate?it?s one of the many things Romney did well in the first contest?but in this case both candidates will be trying to get the balance right in response to a question from a voter in the audience. The more the candidate talks about his opponent's flaws the more he can be accused of not answering the voter's question. It's one thing to ignore a moderator, but when it's a voter, who can be a stand-in for the electorate, it's more perilous?especially when that voter displays his or her displeasure for all of America to see.

Who has an advantage in the town hall setting? Neither candidate is particularly good at emoting in one-on-one conversations. Obama once made fun of Romney for responding to an Iowa woman?s worries about her personal economic situation by talking about productivity, but the president is no smooth talker either. He once responded to a voter?s question with a 2,500-word ramble that took 17 minutes.

The town hall format is not all peril though. Each candidate has a chance to use the voters to make their bigger case. Mitt Romney, for example, could pivot off a weak Obama answer by looking a voter in the eye and explaining how specifically he would offer a different approach. President Obama has an opportunity to make something of Romney?s lack of specificity by turning to a voter and (respectfully!) pointing out that Romney was trying to fool her.

Any time a woman asks a question, move to the edge of your seat. Romney campaign polling after the first debate showed that he helped himself with women by talking about bipartisanship and his record of working with Democrats in Massachusetts. A new Gallup poll of battleground states shows Romney pulling even with Obama among women. The Obama campaign argues that Gallup doesn?t measure likely voters properly. Could be. But Gallup would have to be really wrong for this finding not to be considered a bad sign with an important group Obama needs to do well with women in order to balance out Romney?s advantage with male voters. We?ll see what they really believe though when the president addresses issues that women care about or in how he frames economic questions. Female voters have been a constant preoccupation of the Obama campaign. In the first debate, Obama talked at length about his grandmother, herself an early working woman, to make the case for protecting Social Security and Medicare.

Both Obama and Romney have a history of doing well when they are in a tight spot. Romney showed it in Round One. Now Obama has his chance. His back is against the wall. If he doesn?t step up, he may be leaning against the exit door.

Watch the latest episode of Political Kombat, pitting Joe Biden against Paul Ryan:

Also in Slate, Kerry Howley writes that "' debate' is probably too elevated a word for what we'll be seeing tonight," and David Weigel revisits the 2008 town hall debate between Obama and John McCain. Here are reasons for both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to be optimistic.

Thousands rally for Malala, girl shot by Taliban

Rizwan Tabassum / AFP - Getty Images

A Pakistani woman shouts slogans during a protest march against the assassination attempt by the Taliban on 14-year-old activist Malala Yousafzai, in Karachi on Sunday. Malala is making "slow and steady progress" in her recovery, the military said.

By NBC News and news services

KARACHI, Pakistan -- Tens of thousands rallied in Pakistan's largest city Sunday in support of a 14-year-old girl who was shot and critically wounded by the Taliban for promoting girls' education and criticizing the militant group.?

The demonstration in the southern city of Karachi was by far the largest since Malala Yousufzai and two of her classmates were shot on Oct. 9 while returning home from school in Pakistan's northwest.?

The attack horrified people inside and outside Pakistan and sparked hope among some that it would prompt the government to intensify its fight against the Taliban and their allies.?

But protests against the shooting have been relatively small until now, usually attracting no more than a few hundred people. That response pales in comparison to the tens of thousands of people who held violent protests in Pakistan last month against a film produced in the United States that denigrated Islam's Prophet Muhammad.?

Demonstrations in support of Yousufzai ? and against rampant militant violence in the country in general ? have also been fairly small compared with those focused on issues such as U.S. drone attacks and the NATO supply route to Afghanistan that runs through Pakistan.?

Positive developments have been reported regarding the recovery of 14-year-old Malala Yousufzai, who was shot by the Taliban near her school on Tuesday. NBC'S Amna Nawaz reports.

Right-wing Islamic parties and organizations in Pakistan that regularly pull thousands of supporters into the streets to protest against the U.S. have less of an incentive to speak out against the Taliban, who share their desire to impose Islamic law in the country ? even if they may disagree with some of the militant group's violent tactics.?

Pakistan's mainstream political parties are often also more willing to harangue the U.S. than direct their people power against Islamist militants shedding blood across the country ? partly out of fear and partly because they rely on Islamist parties for electoral support.?

NBC's Amna Nawaz reports on the current condition of Malala Yousufzai, the 14-year-old Pakistani girl who survived an attack by the Taliban. Police officials have arrested three young men thought to be connected to the shooting.

One of the exceptions is the political party that organized Sunday's rally in Karachi, the Muttahida Quami Movement. The party's chief, Altaf Hussain, criticized both Islamic and other mainstream political parties for failing to organize rallies to protest the attack against Yousufzai.?

He called the Taliban gunmen who shot the girl "beasts" and said the shooting was an attack on "the ideology of Pakistan."?

"Malala Yousufzai is a beacon of knowledge. She is the daughter of the nation," Hussain told the audience by telephone from London, where he is in self-imposed exile because of legal cases pending against him in Pakistan. His party is the strongest in Karachi.?

Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com

Many of the demonstrators carried the young girl's picture and banners praising her bravery and expressing solidarity.?

Yousufzai earned the enmity of the Taliban for publicizing their behavior when they took over the northwestern Swat Valley, where she lived, and for speaking about the importance of education for girls.?

The group first started to exert its influence in Swat in 2007 and quickly extended its reach to much of the valley by the next year. They set about imposing their will on residents by forcing men to grow beards, preventing women from going to the market and blowing up many schools ? the majority for girls.

Images of daily life, political pursuits, religious rites and deadly violence.

Yousufzai wrote about these practices in a journal for the BBC under a pseudonym when she was just 11. After the Taliban were pushed out of the valley in 2009 by the Pakistani military, she became even more outspoken in advocating for girls' education. She appeared frequently in the media and was given one of the country's highest honors for civilians for her bravery.

The Pakistani Taliban said they carried out the shooting because Yousufzai was promoting "Western thinking." Police have arrested at least three suspects in connection with the attack, but the two gunmen who carried out the shooting remain at large.

The young girl was shot in the neck, and the bullet headed toward her spine. Doctors at a military hospital operated on her to remove the bullet from her neck, and she was put on a ventilator. Her condition improved somewhat on Saturday when she was able to move her legs and hands after her sedatives were reduced.

On Sunday, she was successfully taken off the ventilator for a short period and later reconnected to avoid fatigue, the military said. Doctors said she is making slow and steady progress.

The possibility of transferring Malala overseas for continued treatment was still being considered, a military spokesman said. Pakistan has arranged a specially equipped air ambulance with the United Arab Emirates that will be used if doctors decide to move her abroad.

Visas are being finalized for the air ambulance crew and six doctors who will accompany the flight, the Pakistani ambassador to the country, Jamil Ahmed Khan, told Pakistan's Geo TV. Arrangements have been made to treat the girl at three hospitals in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, he said.?

HBT: A-Rod returns to starting lineup

After he was benched in favor of Eric Chavez for the decisive Game 5 of the ALDS against the Orioles yesterday, Alex Rodriguez is back in the starting lineup for Game 1 of the ALCS tonight against Doug Fister and the Tigers.

Rodriguez will play third base and bat sixth in his return. It certainly makes sense to put A-Rod back out there tonight, as the Yankees? backs aren?t up against the wall anymore. Chavez went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts yesterday, so it?s not like he made a very compelling argument to stick in the lineup tonight. Still, the Tigers will exclusively use right-handers in their rotation, so if A-Rod continues to struggle, he may find himself on the bench again at some point during the series.

Here?s the full Yankees? lineup for Game 1 of the ALCS:

1. Derek Jeter, SS
2. Ichiro Suzuki, LF
3. Robinson Cano, 2B
4. Mark Teixeira, 1B
5. Raul Ibanez, DH
6. Alex Rodriguez, 3B
7. Nick Swisher, RF
8. Curtis Granderson, CF
9. Russell Martin, C
