Hand-Eye Coordination
Striking a golf ball with a club can help children develop their hand-eye coordination, an important skill for other sports and many activities in life. To help your child develop their hand-eye coordination further, learn some basic putting games and work on their technique at home or on the practice putting green at your local driving range.
Discipline
Even if your child doesn't end up being a great golfer on the PGA circuit, the discipline needed to learn the fundamentals and practice golf regularly will be valuable for your child throughout their life in all of their endeavors. Try to set regular practice times for your child and make sure they stick with them. As your child gets better, they may even want to practice more frequently, teaching them to balance activities they enjoy with school and family.
Bonding
Teaching your kids to play golf can be an activity that can help you bond and spend quality time with your child. As your child progresses, you can even compete with them because of the handicapping system in golf and the varying distances of tee boxes. A little healthy competition can be good for children as long as they're having fun at the same time.
Exercise
Approximately 20 to 25 percent of children in the United States are overweight, and about 10 percent are considered obese. For children that are overweight, getting outside and doing any physical activity is an essential part of developing a healthy lifestyle that will stay with them into adulthood. Golf may be a low-impact exercise, but the process of carrying clubs and walking from hole to hole will help kids lose weight along with a healthy diet. Maybe more important, learning to play golf could get them more interested being involved in other sports and fitness related activities.
Business
If you work in a corporate environment, you probably already know how important playing golf can be. After all, not all business deals are hammered out at a conference table. Learning to play golf can be a valuable asset for your kids, whatever their professional aims are later in life. Joining a golf club or spending time at the driving range as an adult can be an excellent way to network and meet people. This could help advance their career through meeting people that they may not otherwise meet through work or social activities.
