Why Nobody is Using Your Book's Press Release - Book Marketing ...

By Sandra Beckwith

So many authors are frustrated by the book publicity and promotion process ? and who can blame them? It?s not enough to write and publish a top-quality book ? we also have to be publicity, promotion, and social media experts, too. And many have to do all of this while working full-time, parenting, or care-giving.

There?s no question that it can be a challenge to do all that seems required ? and to do it well enough to get results.

One of those non-negotiable ?must dos? we hear about relates to writing and distributing a press release that announces a book. We send this essential tool with review copies, but the versatile book announcement press release can do so much more than help secure reviews. It can boost website traffic, generate news items, prompt media interviews, secure speaking engagements, and, of course, sell books.

Avoid these 4 mistakes

Unfortunately, too many authors aren?t getting results from their book announcement press releases. There are a number of reasons why that might be happening, but usually, it?s because of one of these four mistakes:

  1. The press release focuses on the author, not the book. How do you know if you?ve made this mistake? Is your name in the press release headline? Is the author description longer than the book description? If you answer ?Yes? to either, you?re guilty. Remember, while you?re the brains behind the words, the book ? not the author ? is the product.
  2. There are too many grammar and spelling mistakes. The most common culprits are words that sound alike but are spelled differently ? ?there? instead of ?they?re? or ?your? instead of ?you?re.? Check everything for accuracy before you send it out because if your press release has mistakes, many journalists will think that your book has mistakes, too.
  3. You?ve sent it as an attachment. Most journalists won?t open attachments. Learn how to send your press release the right way from ?How to e-mail a press release to a journalist.?
  4. You used only a free press release distribution service. These services don?t actually ?distribute? your press release to the media. They post your release on their site and if you?re lucky, journalists who are interested in your topic find it there. The paid services, on the other hand, actually push your information out to journalists at the media outlets that are most likely to be interested in your news. Learn more about the differences between free and paid sites and find a link to a list of the free sites at, ?How to use PRWeb for press release distribution.?

You can learn more about common press release problems and discover how to write a press release that gets results in Get Your Book in the News: How to Write a Press Release That Announces Your Book. This short, but very detailed, e-book will save you hours and hours of time, reduce your frustration, and minimize disappointment.

Amazingly Easy Internet Marketing Tips That Will Change Your Outlook

Internet marketing becomes more relevant as technology advances. The advice and information contained in this article will help you learn, even if you are just a beginner. Use your new found knowledge to use internet marketing to your benefit.

Try to find out what types of emails are effective at getting your customers to take action. Using an A/B test is a popular method to use. Build an email, then change one critical item to create a variation. You will be comparing the effectiveness of the alternate versions, so make sure that only one thing is different, whether it is the introduction, the call to action, or the subject line. Distribute the emails to comparable groups and measure the results. Whichever one works best is the one that you should use for the rest of your emailing campaign.

Maximize the potential of your advertisements by letting customers know about the instantaneous benefits you offer. Brag about how quickly your customers can use your site, have products delivered to their front doors and see the amazing results of using your products or services. This means improving download speed, having very fast checkouts, or quickly confirming orders.

A squeeze page is a great way to build a contact list. This page will ask your visitors for their email address. You should offer them a promo item as an exchange for the email address. This will help encourage them to share their information.

Offer your customers a place on your website to post reviews, ask questions and interact. User reviews can help boost sales as well as increase your online presence.

Capitalize on the mobile marketing revolution. Text notifications are a great way to let your visitors know there is a promotion on. This will help you in marketing your product and it is a new concept.

For example, if you sell websites, partner up with a writer to offer his or her customers discounts. You can also let your partner provide discounts to customers on your products, and you both will receive extra revenue due to expanded audiences.

Giving your customers the chance to receive an Ezine is one of the most effective marketing techniques you can employ. Images that create a personal link with your business can help. You may want to use photos of yourself, your staff, or your family. Think about adding amusing morsel of your work environment and also your life at home. Try to pique interest with a creative subject.

Do everything possible to make sure that your site?s content remains up-to-date. Old, outdated information is going to give the viewer the impression that you do not care about your company, and therefore your customers. A nice up-to-date site will encourage viewers to stay.

Contribute to a charitable organization. It is important that the charity you choose is something that would be supported by most people. You will get free advertisement from this charity and boost your image. If you wish to, choose multiple charities and allow people to pick out their favorite.

A mailing list of your clients is essential. Give your clients the opportunity to opt-in to signing up with a subscribe link or making their email address part of the ordering process. This valuable information can be used at a later date to send out promotional material and sales information.

Use vocabulary that people relate with your product when you are doing internet marketing. They will feel more comfortable reading things they are familiar with. You need to use wordage that your readers are familiar with to more effectively promote your brand.

A good way to attract visitors to your website is to offer them some sort of free course. Ensure you that you cross-market the free product with another, relative product and this will entice your customer to buy more than they originally intended. Create your advertising campaign to show off your new and necessary online course.

Making use of the Internet for business marketing can be intimidating at first. It is not that different from other forms of marketing. By incorporating all you have learned today, you can generate more profits for your business and be on your way to grabbing a hold of a lot more customers

Building blocks of life found around young star

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? A team of astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has spotted sugar molecules in the gas surrounding a young Sun-like star. This is the first time sugar been found in space around such a star, and the discovery shows that the building blocks of life are in the right place, at the right time, to be included in planets forming around the star.

The astronomers found molecules of glycolaldehyde -- a simple form of sugar [1] -- in the gas surrounding a young binary star, with similar mass to the Sun, called IRAS 16293-2422. Glycolaldehyde has been seen in interstellar space before [2], but this is the first time it has been found so near to a Sun-like star, at distances comparable to the distance of Uranus from the Sun in the Solar System. This discovery shows that some of the chemical compounds needed for life existed in this system at the time of planet formation [3].

"In the disc of gas and dust surrounding this newly formed star, we found glycolaldehyde, which is a simple form of sugar, not much different to the sugar we put in coffee," explains Jes J?rgensen (Niels Bohr Institute, Denmark), the lead author of the paper. "This molecule is one of the ingredients in the formation of RNA, which -- like DNA, to which it is related -- is one of the building blocks of life."

The high sensitivity of ALMA -- even at the technically challenging shortest wavelengths at which it operates -- was critical for these observations, which were made with a partial array of antennas during the observatory's Science Verification phase [4].

"What it is really exciting about our findings is that the ALMA observations reveal that the sugar molecules are falling in towards one of the stars of the system," says team member Cecile Favre (Aarhus University, Denmark). "The sugar molecules are not only in the right place to find their way onto a planet, but they are also going in the right direction."

The gas and dust clouds that collapse to form new stars are extremely cold [5] and many gases solidify as ice on the particles of dust where they then bond together and form more complex molecules. But once a star has been formed in the middle of a rotating cloud of gas and dust, it heats the inner parts of the cloud to around room temperature, evaporating the chemically complex molecules, and forming gases that emit their characteristic radiation as radio waves that can be mapped using powerful radio telescopes such as ALMA.

IRAS 16293-2422 is located around 400 light-years away, comparatively close to Earth, which makes it an excellent target for astronomers studying the molecules and chemistry around young stars. By harnessing the power of a new generation of telescopes such as ALMA, astronomers now have the opportunity to study fine details within the gas and dust clouds that are forming planetary systems.

"A big question is: how complex can these molecules become before they are incorporated into new planets? This could tell us something about how life might arise elsewhere, and ALMA observations are going to be vital to unravel this mystery," concludes Jes J?rgensen.

The work is described in a paper to appear in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), an international astronomy facility, is a partnership of Europe, North America and East Asia in cooperation with the Republic of Chile. ALMA is funded in Europe by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), in North America by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and the National Science Council of Taiwan (NSC) and in East Asia by the National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS) of Japan in cooperation with the Academia Sinica (AS) in Taiwan. ALMA construction and operations are led on behalf of Europe by ESO, on behalf of North America by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), which is managed by Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI) and on behalf of East Asia by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). The Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) provides the unified leadership and management of the construction, commissioning and operation of ALMA.

Notes

[1] Sugar is the common name for a range of small carbohydrates (molecules containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, typically with a hydrogen:oxygen atomic ratio of 2:1, as in water). Glycolaldehyde has the chemical formula C2H4O2. The sugar commonly used in food and drink is sucrose, which is a larger molecule than glycolaldehyde, and another example of this set of compounds.

[2] Glycolaldehyde has been detected in two places in space so far -- first towards the Galactic Centre cloud Sgr B2, [using the National Science Foundation's (NSF) 12 Meter Telescope at Kitt Peak (USA) in 2000][1], and [with the NSF's Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (also USA) in 2004][2], and in the high-mass hot molecular core G31.41+0.31 [using the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (France) in 2008][3].

[3] Accurate laboratory measurements of the characteristic wavelengths of radio waves emitted by glycolaldehyde were critical for the team's identification of the molecule in space. In addition to the glycolaldehyde, IRAS 16293-2422 is also known to harbour a number of other complex organic molecules, including ethylene glycol, methyl formate and ethanol.

[4] Early scientific observations with a partial array of antennas began in 2011 (see[ eso1137][4]). Both before and after this, a range of Science Verification observations have been performed to demonstrate that ALMA is capable of producing data of the required quality, and the data produced have been made publicly available. The results described here use some of these Science Verification data. Construction of ALMA will be completed in 2013, when 66 high-precision antennas will be fully operational.

[5] They are usually around 10 degrees above absolute zero: about -263 degrees Celsius.

Serviced Offices Manchester To Help Maximize Your Business ...

With corporate business image gaining maximum relevance for the success or failure of the business in today's fast paced economy, the popularity of serviced offices have increased by leaps and bounds. If you are a Manchester based businessman and want to make sure that the locations and surroundings are conducive to the employees, nothing serves better than serviced offices in Manchester. Frankly speaking, it is unlikely for the workforce to work in a company that has pitiable work ambiance and facilities. So, as a business owner, it is important to ensure that the office meets the employee's needs.

Serviced offices in Manchester are the types of offices that are located in good setting and boasts of work-friendly ambiance and facilities. Such establishments can be rented for a short period of time on a contract basis and one can surrender the house when the matter of transfer or shifting comes. A person is required to pay the required rent for every month and the price includes all the costs such as rent, service charges, furniture etc.

Serviced Offices Manchester -- Reasons behind choosing

Most of the business owners in Manchester prefer to rent a space in serviced offices Manchester. These establishments serve handy for those who are looking for company expansion or contraction. Business that demands extra large space or small floor can make good use of these offices. Apart from the flexibility, what deserves special mentioning about the offices is that it lets tenants get comprehensive services. A tenant or better to say a business house can make good use of the pre-installed or available items or facilities to operate their business in a nice way.

Serviced Offices Manchester -- A Cursory Glance At Its Benefits

If you are considering renting a serviced office space in Manchester for your business, it is necessary to take into account its viable benefits:

Saves Time & Effort

One of the notable benefits of serviced office space is that the office operator can easily manage the IT infrastructure in a proper way. This feature saves ample time and effort as you don't need to spend hours contacting your IT support, whenever there are any technical issues. Though a company has its own computers, but one can expect a ready network. Mind you, there are a handful of operators who offer basic IT services or shared network.

Flexibility

Flexibility is the key phrase for many businesses and the use of serviced offices gives you that. If the area in Manchester, where you are renting the office becomes less favorable for the business to operate, you can always end the contract with that property owner, and look for more business friendly area to relocate whenever necessary.

Cost cutting

Serviced offices keep the cost down, letting you invest the extras in other areas of business. At the time of renting traditional office spaces, price is charged based on per square foot while serviced offices in Manchester are priced per workstation. This serves cost-effective enough. Another good thing about serviced office spaces is that multiple features are available at substantial amount and there is no fluctuation of prices.

So, if you are planning to rent serviced offices in Manchester for your business over having to buy one outright, there seems no better choice than rented serviced offices.

Sunday Night Speech Prep for Mitt and Ann Romney

BOSTON - Practice makes perfect, so for Mitt and Ann Romney that meant spending a Sunday evening inside a local New Hampshire prep school practicing their convention speeches.

The Romneys spent about two hours this evening at a high school near their Wolfeboro lake house, accompanied by senior adviser Stuart Stevens.

Romney, wearing a white polo shirt and khakis, walked inside with Ann, who clutched her iPad and a stack of notepaper, and told reporters, "Gonna be a great convention."

When Romney emerged hours later, his hand on the small of Ann's back, reporters shouted, "How's the speech?"

"She's great," said Romney, pointing to Ann and giving a thumbs up.

When pressed if that means his own speech isn't doing as well, Romney laughed.

"I just compliment my wife's," he said.

Ann Romney is slated to speak on Tuesday night and Romney's speech will be on Thursday.

Woman who fought flesh-eating illness goes home

After more than three months in the hospital and a rehabilitation clinic, a young Georgia woman who survived a rare fleshing-eating disease returned home to a family dinner and a wheelchair-accessible house now equipped with an exercise room and private elevator.

Aimee Copeland, 24, had been away from her family's home in Snellville outside Atlanta since May 4, when doctors diagnosed her with the life-threatening infection she contracted after gashing her leg while zip lining over the Tallapoosa River. Both of Copeland's hands, her left leg and her right foot were amputated at a hospital in Augusta. Then Copeland moved to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta for nearly two months of learning to move, eat, bathe and care for herself without prosthetic limbs.

With two trips in the family car to haul all of her things, and the bumper nearly dragging on the ground, Copeland moved back home Wednesday, her father said.

"It was almost like you were bringing a kid home from college," Andy Copeland said in a phone interview Thursday. "When we got back home, Aimee rolled around in her room and she was really laughing it up."

She returned to a home that had received a major makeover. A homebuilder, Pulte Homes, added a 1,956-square-foot living space for Copeland onto her parents' home. It includes a bedroom and bathroom with wheelchair-accessible features; wider doorways; an exercise room with parallel bars and other equipment; and an elevator between the addition's two floors. The $200,000 job was paid for by donations, at no cost to the Copeland family.

Copeland also got her first dinner outing and chose the steakhouse where her sister works, her father said. She dined on shrimp stew and spinach dip.

"She's actually very successful and is able to get around a good bit," Copeland's father said. "Last night she never wore a prosthetic limb the whole day. She was eating and drinking and taking care of herself without ever putting a prosthetic on."

He said his daughter is still adjusting to using prosthetic limbs and often finds them uncomfortably hot and itchy. Even without them, she's learning to pick up and use pens and other utensils by pressing her arms together to grip them. She also has special cuffs that fit on the ends of her arms that can hold a toothbrush, a fork or a spoon.

Copeland was pursuing a graduate degree in psychology at the University of West Georgia when she was injured during an outing with friends in May. She fell from a broken zip line onto sharp rocks along the Tallapoosa River and gashed her leg. Days later, doctors diagnosed Copeland with necrotizing fasciitis, a bacterial infection that emits toxins that can destroy muscle, fat and skin tissue.

Copeland defied doctors' expectations with a rapid recovery. Her father says they at first gave her just a slim chance of surviving, and she spent weeks sedated and breathing on a respirator.

Andy Copeland said it's unclear when his daughter will be able to return to school to finish her graduate thesis. The campus is 75 miles from her parents' home.

For now, he said, Copeland is just happy to be home.

"Right now her mental condition is wonderful, her health is good and her energy level is high," Copeland's father said. "She's doing great."

Imaging study sheds new light on alcohol-related birth defects

Thursday, August 23, 2012

A collaborative research effort by scientists at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Duke University, and University College of London in the UK, sheds new light on alcohol-related birth defects.

The project, led by Kathleen K. Sulik, PhD, a professor in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology and the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies at UNC, could help enhance how doctors diagnose birth defects caused by alcohol exposure in the womb. The findings also illustrate how the precise timing of that exposure could determine the specific kinds of defects.

"We now know that maternal alcohol use is the leading known and preventable cause of birth defects and mental disability in the United States," Sulik said. "Alcohol's effects can cause a range of cognitive, developmental and behavioral problems that typically become evident during childhood, and last a lifetime."

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is at the severe end of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). First described in 1972, FAS is recognized by a specific pattern of facial features: small eyelid openings, a smooth ridge on the upper lip (absence of a central groove, or philtrum), and a thin upper lip border.

In its full-blown state, FAS affects roughly 1 in 750 live births in the U.S. And while clinicians typically look for those classical facial features in making a diagnosis, within the broader classification of FASD "adverse outcomes vary considerably and most individuals don't exhibit the facial characteristics that currently define FAS," said the study's lead author Robert J. Lipinski, PhD, a postdoctoral scientist in Sulik's lab. "This study could expand the base of diagnostic criteria used by clinicians who suspect problems caused by maternal alcohol use."

In their animal-based studies, the Sulik lab team has collaborated with co-author G. Allan Johnson, PhD and his group at Duke University's Center for In Vivo Microscopy. Johnson, professor of radiology and physics, has developed new imaging tools with spatial resolution up to a million times higher than clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These include small bore tools suitable for imaging fetal mice that are only 15 mm long.

To quantify facial shape from MRI data, the study team turned to co-author Peter Hammond, a professor of computational biology at UCL's Institute of Child Health, in London. Hammond invented powerful new techniques for 3D shape analysis that have already proven successful in objectively defining facial shape changes in humans.

In the study, described in the August 22, 2012 issue of the online journal PLOS ONE, Lipinski and Sulik treated one group of mice with alcohol on their seventh day of pregnancy, a time corresponding to the third week of pregnancy in humans. A second group of mice was treated just 36 hours later, approximating the fourth week of human pregnancy. The amount of alcohol given was large, "high doses that most women wouldn't achieve unless they were alcoholic and had a tolerance for alcohol," Sulik said.

Near the end of pregnancy, the fetuses were then imaged at Duke University. These 3D data sets showed individual brain regions, as well as accurate and detailed facial surfaces, from which Hammond and research assistant and co-author Michael Suttie performed shape analyses.

The team found that the earlier alcohol exposure time elicited the classic FAS facial features, including characteristic abnormalities of the upper lip and eyes. What they observed in fetuses exposed just 36 hours later, however, was a surprise. These mice exhibited unique and in some cases opposing facial patterns, such as shortened upper lip, a present philtrum, and the brain, instead of appearing too narrow in the front, appeared wide.

"Overall, the results of our studies show that alcohol can cause more than one pattern of birth defects, and that the type and extent of brain abnormalities?which are the most devastating manifestation of prenatal alcohol exposure?in some cases may be predicted by specific facial features," Sulik said. "And, importantly, alcohol can cause tremendously devastating and permanent damage at a time in development when most women don't recognize that they're pregnant."

Cellular basis for how anti-aging cosmetics work identified

ScienceDaily (Aug. 13, 2012) ? A team of investigators from UC Davis and Peking University have discovered a mechanism that may explain how alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) ? the key ingredient in cosmetic chemical peels and wrinkle-reducing creams ? work to enhance skin appearance. An understanding of the underlying process may lead to better cosmetic formulations as well as have medical applications.

The findings were published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry in an article entitled "Intracellular proton-mediated activation of TRPV3 channels accounts for exfoliation effect of alpha hydroxyl acids on keratinocytes."

AHAs are a group of weak acids typically derived from natural sources such as sugar cane, sour milk, apples and citrus that are well known in the cosmetics industry for their ability to enhance the appearance and texture of skin. Before this research, little was known about how AHAs actually caused skin to flake off and expose fresh, underlying skin.

The cellular pathway the research team studied focuses on an ion channel ? known as transient receptor potential vanilloid 3 (TRPV3) ? located in the cell membrane of keratinocytes, the predominant cell type in the outer layer of skin. The channel is known from other studies to play an important role in normal skin physiology and temperature sensitivity.

In a series of experiments that involved recording electrical currents across cultured cells exposed to AHAs, the investigators developed a model that describes how glycolic acid (the smallest and most biologically available AHA) enters into keratinocytes and generates free protons, creating acidic conditions within the cell. The low pH strongly activates the TRPV3 ion channel, opening it and allowing calcium ions to flow into the cell. Because more protons also enter through the open TRPV3 channel, the process feeds on itself. The resulting calcium ion overload in the cell leads to its death and skin exfoliation.

"Our experiments are the first to show that the TRPV3 ion channel is likely to be the target of the most effective skin enhancer in the cosmetics industry," said Jie Zheng, professor of physiology and membrane biology at UC Davis and one of the principal investigators of the study. "Although AHAs have been used for years, no one until now understood their likely mechanism of action."

Besides being found in skin cells, TRPV3 also is found in cells in many areas of the nervous system and is sensitive to temperature as well as acidity. The authors speculate that the channel may have a variety of important physiological functions, including pain control.

Lead author Xu Cao, who conducted the study with UC Davis scientists as a visiting student from Peking University Health Science Center, focuses on TRPV3 channel research. With a team of researchers in China, he recently contributed to the discovery that a mutation in TRPV3 leads to Olmsted syndrome, a rare congenital disorder characterized by severe itching and horny skin development over the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. While in the UC Davis Department of Physiology and Membrane Biology, Cao discovered that AHAs also utilize the TRPV3 channel.

"Calcium channels are becoming increasingly recognized as having vital functions in skin physiology," said Cao. "TRPV3 has the potential to become an important target not only for the cosmetics industry but for analgesia and treating skin disease."

The other study author and co-principal investigator is KeWei Wang of Peking University School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, where the research was conducted.

The research was funded with grants to KeWei Wang from the National Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Education in China, the China Scholarship Council, and to Zheng from the National Institutes of Health.

a long-lasting, satisfying relationship ? Anger Management Chicago ...

Posted on August 12, 2012. Filed under: dating, love, marriage, relationships, sex | Tags: Dating, love, marriage, relationships, sex |

Pause for a moment and think about your relationships. What thoughts come to mind? How do you feel about your relationship? Your relationships generally provide great happiness and satisfaction for you. Or, because of high levels of conflict and unfulfilled expectations, your relationships may be a source of great anxiety and frustration. Another possibility is that life for you has become so hectic, that you never seem to be able to connect with others as you once did. Do any of these situations sound familiar? If so, you are not alone. Many people relate to one of these descriptions.

About half of all marriages in theUnited?Statesend in divorce. It is obvious that many people do not get married and live ?happily ever after.? However, marriage continues to be an important goal for most Americans. In fact, over 90 percent of adults will get married at least once in their lifetime. Most spouses start out full of hopes and dreams and are truly committed to making their marriage work. Yet as the reality of living with a less than perfect spouse sets in and the pressures of life build, many individuals feel less romantic and do not find as much satisfaction in their relationships. All relationships change over time. But with hard work and dedication, people can keep their relationships strong and enjoyable. How is it done? What does it take to create a long-lasting, satisfying relationship?

Consider the positive aspects of your relationships. What are you doing that works well and brings you and others joy and happiness? If you have a satisfying relationship, be that with a spouse, sibling, child, parent, or friend, chances are that your relationship has high levels of positivity, empathy, commitment, acceptance, love and respect. These are some of the characteristics that researchers have found to be common in successful relationships. Let?s look at each of these factors.

Positivity ? Experts on relationships have found that the main difference between stable and unstable relationships is the amount of positive thoughts and actions people engage in toward each other. Through careful observation of hundreds of couples, researchers have come to the conclusion that successful spouses have far more positive, than negative interactions. If there is too much negativity, criticizing, demanding, name-calling, holding grudges, etc., the relationship suffers. However, if there is never any negativity, it probably means that frustrations and grievances are not getting air time and unresolved tension is accumulating inside one or both partners. The key is balance between the two extremes.

Empathy ? Another characteristic of a happy relationship is empathy. Empathy means understanding a person?s perspective by putting oneself, in his or her shoes. Many researchers have shown that empathy is important for relationship satisfaction. People are more likely to feel good about their marriage and spouse, if their partner expresses empathy towards them. Husbands and wives are more content in their relationships, when they perceive that their spouses truly understand their thoughts and feelings.

Commitment ? Successful marriages involve both spouses? commitment to the relationship. When two people are truly dedicated to making their marriage work, despite the unavoidable challenges and obstacles that come, they are much more likely to have a relationship that lasts. However, in most Western cultures, individualism is highly valued. Individualism focuses on the needs and fulfillment of the self. Being attentive to one?s own needs is important, but if it is not balanced by a concern for the needs of others, it can easily lead to selfishness in marriage. Husbands and wives who only focus on themselves and their own desires, are not as likely to find joy and satisfaction in their relationships. However, when spouses are committed to investing in their marriage and are willing to sacrifice some of their own preferences for the good of the relationship, they usually have high-quality marriages.

Acceptance ? One of the most basic needs in a relationship is acceptance. Everyone wants to feel valued and respected. When people feel that their spouse, parent, child, sibling or friend truly accepts them for who they are, they are usually more secure and confident in their relationships. Often, there is conflict in relationships because people cannot accept each other and try to demand change from one another. And when one person tries to force change from another, he or she is usually met with resistance. However, research has shown that change is much more likely to occur when people respect differences and accept each other unconditionally as they are right now.

Mutual love and respect ? Perhaps the most important components of successful marriages are love and respect for each other. This may seem very obvious ? why would two people get married who did not love and respect each other? The fact is, as time passes and life becomes increasingly complicated, the marriage often suffers as a result. It is all too easy for spouses to lose touch with each other and neglect the love and romance that once came so easily. It is vital that husbands and wives continue to cultivate love and respect for each other throughout their lives. If they do, it is highly likely that their relationships will remain happy and satisfying.

CNN and Time suspend Zakaria for plagiarism

Fareed Zakaria is apologizing for lifting paragraphs by another writer for use in his column in Time magazine.

By Frazier Moore, The Associated Press

NEW YORK --?Time editor-at-large and CNN host Fareed Zakaria has been suspended by both the magazine and the network for lifting several paragraphs by another writer for his use in a recent Time column.

Zakaria apologized Friday, declaring in a statement he made "a terrible mistake," adding, "It is a serious lapse and one that is entirely my fault."

In a separate statement, Time spokesman Ali Zelenko said the magazine accepts Zakaria's apology, but would suspend his column for one month, "pending further review."

"What he did violates our own standards for our columnists, which is that their work must not only be factual but original; their views must not only be their own but their words as well," Zelenko said.

Shortly afterward, CNN said it had removed from the network's website a blog post that "included similar unattributed excerpts," and taken Zakaria off the air indefinitely.

"CNN has suspended Fareed Zakaria while this matter is under review," said CNN spokeswoman Jennifer Dargan. She said Zakaria's Sunday foreign-affairs program, "GPS," will have its time slots filled in the interim by "Your Money with Ali Veshi" and "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer."

Earlier Friday, media reporters had called attention to similarities between passages in Zakaria's column about gun control that appeared in Time's Aug. 20 issue, and paragraphs from an article on the same subject by Harvard University history professor Jill Lepore published in April in The New Yorker magazine.

In Zakaria's column, titled "The Case for Gun Control," he began one paragraph with the sentences: "Adam Winkler, a professor of constitutional law at UCLA, documents the actual history in 'Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America.' Guns were regulated in the U.S. from the earliest years of the Republic."

A corresponding passage in Lenore's New Yorker essay, titled "Battleground America," begins: "As Adam Winkler, a constitutional-law scholar at U.C.L.A., demonstrates in a remarkably nuanced new book, 'Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America,' firearms have been regulated in the United States from the start."

In Zakaria's statement, he apologized "unreservedly" to Lepore, as well as to his editors and readers.?

Hey, is that Mars or the Mojave in NASA rover's photo?

One of the first images from the camera atop the rover Curiosity's mast shows a Mars landscape that scientists called remarkably Earth-like, as if NASA 'put a rover out in the Mojave Desert.'

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / August 9, 2012

This image released on Aug. 8, by NASA, shows a mosaic of the first two full-resolution images of the Martian surface from the Navigation cameras on NASA's Curiosity rover.

It could be an old postcard from Earth ? a detailed black-and-white picture showing a barren, subtly undulating landscape stretching to a mountain range in the distance.

Looking at the scene, "you would really be forgiven for thinking that NASA was trying to pull a fast one on you and we actually put a rover out in the Mojave Desert and took a picture," complete with "a little L.A. smog coming in there," quips John Grotzinger, a researcher at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and the Mars Science Laboratory mission's project scientist.

But this isn't the Mojave. It's Mars. Specifically, the interior of Gale Crater, with the crater's north rim rising in the distance.

As it examined the photo, the science team marveled at how Earth-like the scene appears, Dr. Grotzinger says. It's among the first images from the navigation camera mounted atop the rover's newly erected mast.

The scene's familiarity hints at why NASA is spending $2.5 billion on the Mars Science Laboratory mission. Mars is Earth-like in many ways, but seemingly is barren of life. Curiosity is designed to help scientists determine whether, in Mars? distant past, this 3-billion to 4-billion-year-old crater hosted an environment where life could have gained a foothold.

Now heading into its third Martian day, or sol, Curiosity has been performing virtually flawlessly as engineers carefully begin flexing its motorized joints and activating cameras and instruments.

Engineers have finished aiming the rover's high-gain antenna toward Earth. Curiosity has fully extended its camera mast, whose three different camera systems sit seven feet above the Martian surface. Engineers are well on the way toward fixing a software glitch with the rover's on-board weather station. And while the interior of the rover is a tad warmer than the engineering team expected, that extra heat will not affect the performance of Curiosity's science packages.

Indeed, the extra warmth may turn out to be helpful, said Jennifer Trosper, mission manager for the Mars Science Laboratory, at a briefing Wednesday. It means the rover will require less energy to warm actuators needed to drive around and to move the rover's seven-foot-long arm. The arm collects rock and soil samples and transfers them to the chemistry lab inside the rover. It also hosts an X-ray device for analyzing minerals in rocks and a small camera that serves as a geologist's magnifying glass.

Using Creativity to Stand Out in Your Career | Mid East and World ...

Standing out in a crowded marketplace isn?t always easy. And these days, people have seen it all, which means you might only get ahead if you use a compelling and unique approach like Pat Lencioni?s to present your ideas.

Several years ago, Mr. Lencioni, 44 years old, of Lafayette, Calif., was a Bain & Co. consultant who loved writing screenplays and fiction pieces on the side. He didn?t move to Hollywood or New York City to pursue his passion.

Instead, Mr. Lencioni stayed where he was?in the business world?and used his talent to break out of the typical management-consultant mold. He began writing business books that read like novels and featured real characters to which textbook- and theory-fatigued readers could relate. In ?The Five Dysfunctions of a Team,? for example, the fictional DecisionTech?s new CEO, Kathryn, must unite a fractured executive team.

Many say Mr. Lencioni?s parables have sold over 2.5 million copies because they attract people who need to be better managers but don?t want to read a traditional business book to do it. ?The plot-driven approach makes people want to read to the end,? says Mr. Lencioni. ?Readers are also more comfortable passing the books on to friends because they personally enjoyed them and were able to learn without a lot of effort.?

So, how do you infuse your day with creativity if it?s not your natural strong suit?

First, block out some time on your calendar to think about it. When you set aside time to do something, you elevate its importance in your mind.

Practice clearing your head of all of your everyday concerns, turn on some music, and let your mind wander. If you?re having trouble letting go, ask one of your artistic friends what she does to get in the right frame of mind and try adapting that technique to make it your own.

It also helps to look at your life and business from a different perspective. In providing career advice during this recession, for instance, I often pretended I was the person I needed to reach?a reader who was out of work. I asked myself, ?What information do I need right now, and how would I best like to receive it??

If your daily reading consists of one paper or online publication and Google news, you might try expanding your horizons.

In particular, today?s literary fiction and narrative nonfiction books are often worded so eloquently that they can?t help but inspire you to express yourself in a more creative way.

If you read before going to sleep, be sure to keep a pen and a notebook by your bed to jot down ideas that come to you in the middle of the night.

You might also want to start carrying a pad and pencil with you when you commute or travel. Inevitably you?ll overhear or see something that provokes an interesting train of thought.

Mr. Lencioni suggests forcing yourself into an uncomfortable situation to get your mind going?like doing manual labor if you?re a high-ranking executive, for example.

Sometimes just getting out of your comfort zone can spark creative ideas. ?And finally,? he says, ?you have to be willing to throw stupid ideas out [there], or ideas that no one believes in but you.?

Recognize that creativity doesn?t understand deadlines. Because you can?t depend on a terrific idea to show up at a certain point, you might try to build in long timelines for projects that require creative zeal and try not to put a lot of pressure on yourself.

?My best insights don?t usually show up when I?m sitting at my computer waiting for them,? says Mr. Lencioni. ?I?ll usually be jogging or in the shower, or out in the public where my creative mind is stimulated by watching others.?

Once you?ve begun to think more creatively, look for ways to apply this change at work, from suggesting new projects to discussing projects in a new way.

(AP) ? The relentless, weather-gone-crazy type of heat that has blistered the United States and other parts of the world in recent years is so rare that it can't be anything but man-made global warming, says a new statistical analysis from a top government scientist.

The research by a man often called the "godfather of global warming" says that the likelihood of such temperatures occurring from the 1950s through the 1980s was rarer than 1 in 300. Now, the odds are closer to 1 in 10, according to the study by NASA scientist James Hansen. He says that statistically what's happening is not random or normal, but pure and simple climate change.

"This is not some scientific theory. We are now experiencing scientific fact," Hansen told The Associated Press in an interview.

Hansen is a scientist at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York and a professor at Columbia University. But he is also a strident activist who has called for government action to curb greenhouse gases for years. While his study was published online Saturday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, it is unlikely to sway opinion among the remaining climate change skeptics.

However, several climate scientists praised the new work.

In a blunt departure from most climate research, Hansen's study ? based on statistics, not the more typical climate modeling ? blames these three heat waves purely on global warming:

?Last year's devastating Texas-Oklahoma drought.

?The 2010 heat waves in Russia and the Middle East, which led to thousands of deaths.

?The 2003 European heat wave blamed for tens of thousands of deaths, especially among the elderly in France.

The analysis was written before the current drought and record-breaking temperatures that have seared much of the United States this year. But Hansen believes this too is another prime example of global warming at its worst.

The new research makes the case for the severity of global warming in a different way than most scientific studies and uses simple math instead of relying on complex climate models or an understanding of atmospheric physics. It also doesn't bother with the usual caveats about individual weather events having numerous causes.

The increase in the chance of extreme heat, drought and heavy downpours in certain regions is so huge that scientists should stop hemming and hawing, Hansen said. "This is happening often enough, over a big enough area that people can see it happening," he said.

Scientists have generally responded that it's impossible to say whether single events are caused by global warming, because of the influence of natural weather variability.

However, that position has been shifting in recent months, as other studies too have concluded climate change is happening right before our eyes.

Hansen hopes his new study will shift people's thinking about climate change and goad governments into action. He wrote an op-ed piece that appeared online Friday in the Washington Post.

"There is still time to act and avoid a worsening climate, but we are wasting precious time," he wrote.

The science in Hansen's study is excellent "and reframes the question," said Andrew Weaver, a climate scientist at the University of Victoria in British Columbia who was a member of the Nobel Prize-winning international panel of climate scientists that issued a series of reports on global warming.

"Rather than say, 'Is this because of climate change?' That's the wrong question. What you can say is, 'How likely is this to have occurred with the absence of global warming?' It's so extraordinarily unlikely that it has to be due to global warming," Weaver said.

For years scientists have run complex computer models using combinations of various factors to see how likely a weather event would happen without global warming and with it. About 25 different aspects of climate change have been formally attributed to man-made greenhouse gases in dozens of formal studies. But these are generally broad and non-specific, such as more heat waves in some regions and heavy rainfall in others.

Another upcoming study by Kevin Trenberth, climate analysis chief at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, links the 2010 Russian heat wave to global warming by looking at the underlying weather that caused the heat wave. He called Hansen's paper an important one that helps communicate the problem.

But there is bound to be continued disagreement. Previous studies had been unable to link the two, and one by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration concluded that the Russian drought, which also led to devastating wildfires, was not related to global warming.

White House science adviser John Holdren praised the paper's findings in a statement. But he also said it is true that scientists can't blame single events on global warming: "This work, which finds that extremely hot summers are over 10 times more common than they used to be, reinforces many other lines of evidence showing that climate change is occurring and that it is harmful."

Skeptical scientist John Christy of the University of Alabama at Huntsville said Hansen shouldn't have compared recent years to the 1950s-1980s time period because he said that was a quiet time for extremes.

But Derek Arndt, director of climate monitoring for the federal government's National Climatic Data Center, said that range is a fair one and often used because it is the "golden era" for good statistics.

Granger Morgan, head of engineering and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University, called Hansen's study "an important next step in what I expect will be a growing set of statistically-based arguments."

In a landmark 1988 study, Hansen predicted that if greenhouse gas emissions continue, which they have, Washington, D.C., would have about nine days each year of 95 degrees or warmer in the decade of the 2010s. So far this year, with about four more weeks of summer, the city has had 23 days with 95 degrees or hotter temperatures.

Hansen says now he underestimated how bad things would get.

And while he hopes this will spur action including a tax on the burning of fossil fuels, which emit carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas, others doubt it.

Science policy expert Roger Pielke Jr. of the University of Colorado said Hansen clearly doesn't understand social science, thinking a study like his could spur action. Just because people understand a fact that doesn't mean people will act on it, he said.

In an email, he wrote: "Hansen is pursuing a deeply flawed model of policy change, one that will prove ineffectual and with its most lasting consequence a further politicization of climate science (if that is possible!)."

Q. What are your career goals?
A. I would like to further my education in hospitality in a few years from now. Eventually, I would like to see myself as a guest relations officer as I want to make a career in the hospitality business.

Q. What do you think are the key tasks of a room attendant?
A. While there are many tasks that a room attendant is required to perform, the most basic ones are cleaning guest rooms, making and turning beds, reporting maintenance issues, restocking supplies and performing sanitizing procedures.

Q. Do you think you can be an asset to Hyatt? If yes how?
A. Yes! I have been trained in customer services and have had considerable experience working as a room attendant. When your focus is providing nothing but excellent guest services even at the cost of your time and comfort, you cannot help but be an asset to the organization you are working for!

Record crowd set for US-Japan women's final

2012 Olympic Soccer Venues

LONDON (Reuters) - The women's soccer final between the United States and Japan will smash the Olympic women's attendance record on Thursday after a frenzied buying spree for tickets for the gold medal decider at Wembley.

A crowd of at least 83,000 is guaranteed after fans snapped up 5,000 tickets following the defending champions' dramatic 4-3 extra-time win over Canada and world champions Japan's enthralling 2-1 win over France in the semi-finals on Monday.

The Olympic women's soccer attendance record was set in 1996 when 76,489 fans watched the final between the United States and China at the Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia.

The same attendance is officially recorded by football's governing body FIFA for the bronze medal match between Norway and Brazil in the same stadium earlier in the day.

FIFA confirmed on its Twitter feed (@FIFAmedia) that 5,000 tickets were sold in the late rush, meaning Thursday's game will also attract the greatest number of fans to watch a women's match in Britain.

The previous record of 70,584 was set earlier in this London Games when Britain played Brazil at Wembley on July 29 and that in turn was the highest number since 53,000 watched a match in 1920.

A FIFA spokesman said: "We are absolutely delighted with the crowds at the tournament for both men and women - especially the women's matches. It proves what a vital and robust part soccer plays in the Olympic Games - and always has done."

Critics have long said soccer should not be in the Games if Olympic gold is seen as less valuable than World Cup glory.

The record for a women's World Cup final was set in Los Angeles in July 1999 when 90,185 saw the U.S. beat China at the Rosebowl.

Thursday's Olympic final, with the U.S. bidding for a third successive gold, is a re-run of last year's World Cup final when Japan became world champions after beating the U.S. on penalties in Frankfurt in front of 48,817 fans.

Although some tickets for the London Olympic soccer tournament were not sold in the early rounds, the current accumulative total for both men and women's games stands at 1,951,707 - with 569,128 watching women's matches so far.

A record total of 740,014 spectators watched the women's soccer tournament in Beijing four years ago. With the final and bronze-medal match between France and Canada at Coventry still to come, London's final total will be around 660,000.

Arlo White and Brandi Chastain break down Team USA's thrilling win over Canada in the semifinals and look ahead to their World Cup rematch with Japan in the final.
