Venus Williams joins Serena on sideline in Paris

PARIS (AP) ? Used to be that Venus Williams was the one who was highly ranked, the one considered a title contender, the one who would dominate foes so thoroughly that matches would be tidily wrapped up in an hour.

Now 31, and figuring out from day to day how to handle an illness that saps her strength, Williams was on the wrong end of a lopsided 60-minute defeat in the second round of the French Open on Wednesday.

Looking glum and lacking the verve that carried her to seven Grand Slam titles, Williams barely put up any resistance and lost 6-2, 6-3 to No. 3-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland at Roland Garros. Coming a day after her younger sister Serena was stunned in the first round by 111th-ranked Virginie Razzano of France, the early exit marked the first time in 43 major tournaments with both in the field that neither Williams got to the third round.

"I felt like I played," Williams said after making a hard-to-fathom 33 unforced errors, 27 more than Radwanska. "That pretty much sums it up."

This one was not exactly an out-of-nowhere upset, considering that Williams is ranked 53rd now, never has been as good on clay as on other surfaces, lost to Radwanska 6-4, 6-1 two months ago, and is learning how to be a professional athlete with Sjogren's syndrome, an autoimmune disease that can cause fatigue and joint pain.

Still, the meek way Williams departed was striking, considering that she has been ranked No. 1, has appeared in 14 major finals to Radwanska's zero, and from 2008-10 won 10 of the 11 sets the two played against each other.

"I don't know if I ever asked myself, 'Why me?' I mean, obviously it's frustrating at times. I don't know if there's anything mental more I can do at this point, but there's a lot of stages to go through with this kind of thing," said Williams, whose fastest-in-the-game serve was broken five times Wednesday. "There's a lot of people who have it a lot worse than I do. I'm still playing a professional sport, so I have to be very positive. And I'm going to have ups and downs. I haven't gotten to the 'Why me?' yet. I hope I never get to the 'Why me?' I'm not allowed to feel sorry for myself."

It's hard to know, however, how much energy she'll have from one day to the next.

Whenever the alarm goes off, Williams starts to find out what the next 24 hours will be like.

"Every morning is different. Some mornings, I don't feel great, then it's a better day than I thought it was going to be. I can't automatically be discouraged. When I wake up, I just have to see how it goes. Sometimes I get a second wind," she explained. "It's just so hard to know."

Williams revealed her diagnosis in late August at the U.S. Open, when she withdrew before her second-round match. She skipped the Australian Open in January, before returning to the tour in March in a bid to earn a berth on the U.S Olympic team. Spots are awarded based on rankings ? the top 56 get in automatically, with a maximum of four per country, so Williams should be OK.

"This tournament, for me, was all about getting to the Olympics, as I have said a couple million times," she said. "If that happens for me, and I think the chances are good, then I come out a victor. So that's why I was here."

At changeovers, Williams would slink to the sideline, then sit on her green bench with hands clasped, staring straight ahead, expressionless and motionless.

She was far more animated afterward, laughing often while discussing her condition and graciously complimenting the play of Radwanska, a 23-year-old who is coming into her own this season.

"Of course, when I saw the draw, I wasn't very happy, because Venus as a second-round opponent, it's not easy," Radwanska said. "Maybe she just had a bad day here."

While never advancing past the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam tournament, Radwanska has shown signs of being ready for a major breakthrough, with three lesser titles and a tour-high 38 victories in 2012. Of her seven losses, six were against No. 1-ranked Victoria Azarenka.

On an easy day for the top-seeded players, Azarenka breezed into the third round with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Dinah Pfizenmaier of Germany 6-1, 6-1, while the No. 1 man, Novak Djokovic, extended his Grand Slam winning streak to 23 matches by beating Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia 6-0, 6-4, 6-4.

"Being No. 1 is a difficult job, because everybody want to catch you, everybody want to move you from the spot," said Azarenka, pushed to three sets in the first round. "Nothing is going to come easy just because you're No. 1."

For years, Roger Federer managed to make things look easy at the top. Now No. 3, he went through a bit of a glitch and dropped a set Wednesday before earning his record-breaking 234th Grand Slam match victory, 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-3 against 92nd-ranked Adrian Ungur of Romania.

"I have been around for so long that, even though I expect myself to win, I can still manage to do that," said Federer, on course for a semifinal showdown with Djokovic. "Whereas in the beginning, when you think you're good but you're maybe not that good yet, you get many more surprise losses."

Before rain cut play short in the evening, all 10 seeded men whose matches ended won, including No. 9 Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 U.S. Open champion, who acknowledged his bandaged left knee is a "constant bother."

Four seeded women lost, including No. 8 Marion Bartoli of France, the runner-up to Williams in the 2007 Wimbledon final, when the American was near the height of her powers.

Dormice whiskers 'aid climbing'

Dormice use their whiskers to help them climb trees, researchers say.

By twitching them upwards, outwards and straight ahead up to 25 times a second, they sense where they are going, a University of Sheffield team has found.

The process, called whisking, is used by some other rodents, and by whiskered mammals including seals and walruses.

Dr Robyn Grant, from the university's Active Touch Laboratory says whisking is "a parallel sense to our sense of touch".

She says hazel dormice (Muscardinus avellanarius) use their whiskers, or vibrissae, in a similar way to how people use their eyes - scanning to recognise what is in front of them.

  • Dormice may spend up to 75% of their life asleep
  • Hazel dormice (Muscardinus avellanarius) numbers dropped by about 50% in the 20th Century
  • Hazel dormice live for up to five years, hibernating on the ground in the winter
  • They build their summer nests in tree holes or thick bramble and stay living in trees while it's warm
  • The species is vulnerable to changes in habitat such as loss of hedgerows, altered farming practices and fragmentation of woodlands.

"Because of the uneven surface on branches, they vibrate them to find where to put their feet, as well as to work out where there's a gap and where to change branches," says Dr Grant.

Dormice are endangered in the UK and hibernate most of the year in small nests on the ground, but in the summer they live in trees.

Dr Grant says that they can also use the sensory nodes in their whisker follicles, which respond to the vibrations of their whiskers. This helps them to locate and determine the size, shape and quality of a food item, or to sense their way home.

The research by the team at the Active Touch Laboratory (ATL@S) is working to compare how a number animals, including opossums, seals and other rodents, move and use their whiskers in a sensory way.

Dr Grant says there are differences in how each species moves its whiskers. Different animals twitch at a different frequency, for example, and most rodents generally whisk their whiskers just backwards and forwards.

"We really want to try to classify strategies common between different animals, looking at whether all climbers use whiskers this way," says Dr says Prof Grant.

"And [we want to] use their different experiences in whisking to try and explore the evolution of their sensing systems."

By using an infrared lightbox, they were able to film nocturnal animals in the dark.

The team recorded the movements of whiskers using a high-speed video camera, which films at 500 frames per second, enabling the researchers to play back the whiskers' movements in slow-motion.

Using this high-speed digital videography, the team has examined whisker movements of nine species of British rodent.

They studied wood, harvest, yellow-necked and house mice; field, bank and water voles; brown rats; hazel dormice and one non-rodent - the water shrew.

The team then used "automatic whisker tracker" computer software to analyse the movements recorded on the video, and obtain data that they could compare.

Dr Grant says the rodents all showed whisking that was similar to rats and mice, but the water shrew did not. This indicated that the dormouse family (Gliridae) shared a common ancestor with other rodents.

She added that previous "whisker research" may have involved animals' whiskers being trimmed off. Without whiskers dormice cannot walk well; they fall off ledges and cannot cross gaps.

Sector leaders again urge government to scrap the tax relief cap ...

Sir Stephen Bubb

Sir Stephen Bubb

Voluntary sector leaders have called for a u-turn on the tax relief cap after the government?s climbdowns on the proposed pasty and caravan taxes.

The proposed cap, announced by the Chancellor, George Osborne, in this year?s Budget, would limit individual claims for tax relief on charitable donations to ?50,000 or a quarter of their income, whichever is higher, from April 2013.

Peter Lewis, chief executive of the Institute of Fundraising, said: ?The government has shown it has listened to public concerns on its pasty tax ? it should also listen to public concerns about plans that will hit much-needed charity giving.?

Sir Stephen Bubb, head of the charity chief executives body Acevo, said: ?The government?s decision to u-turn on pasties but to stick with the charity tax shows where its priorities lie.

?When it comes down to it, Greggs? profits matter more than the charities we once thought central to the Prime Minister?s big society vision.?

Sir Stuart Etherington, chief executive of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, said: ?The concessions from the Chancellor show that he is willing to listen to reason after a period of genuine consultation. We hope he will apply the same logic to the much-maligned ?charity tax?.

?The cap on Gift Aid is already putting donors off. It is affecting the vital work undertaken by charities both large and small, be that advancing medical research, supporting returning veterans or caring for the elderly.?

More than 1,000 charities have backed the campaign against the tax relief cap, called Give it Back, George.

John Low, chief executive of the Charities Aid Foundation, said: ?Now is the time for [the government] to listen to charities, donors and its own supporters, do the right thing and exempt charitable donations from the damaging tax cap.

?The Prime Minister?s vision of a big society could be transformational, but risks being undermined by measures such as the cap on tax relief for charitable donations.?

A survey of 2,044 people, commissioned by CAF, found that nearly two-thirds of respondents were concerned that plans to cap tax relief on donations undermined the government?s concept of a big society.

The poll, which was released this week, found that 76 per cent of those surveyed agreed that the government could not expect charities to play a greater role in providing services if it introduced the cap.

The Conservative MP David Ruffley has been quoted in several newspapers saying that the government was preparing to make a climbdown on the tax relief cap. He declined to speak to Third Sector about the comments.

A spokeswoman for the Treasury said: ?The government supports philanthropy and charitable giving, but we also believe that there is an important principle that everybody should make a fair contribution to the public finances through income tax.

?The Budget made clear that we want to ensure charities that rely on large donations are not hit significantly, which is why we said we?d spend time working with the charity sector and philanthropists on the details.?

Experts: Remedial college classes need fixing

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) ? Each year, an estimated 1.7 million U.S. college students are steered to remedial classes to catch them up and prepare them for regular coursework. But a growing body of research shows the courses are eating up time and money, often leading not to degrees but student loan hangovers.

The expense of remedial courses, which typically cost students the same as regular classes but don't fulfill degree requirements, run about $3 billion annually, according to new research by Complete College America, a Washington-based national nonprofit working to increase the number of students with a college degree.

The group says the classes are largely failing the nation's higher education system at a time when student-loan debt has become a presidential campaign issue. Meanwhile, lawmakers in at least two states have pushed through changes and numerous institutions are redesigning the courses.

"Simply putting (students) in three levels of remedial math is really taking their money and time with no hope of success," said Stan Jones, president of Complete College America.

The group's research shows just 1 in 10 remedial students graduate from community colleges within three years and a little more than a third complete bachelor's degrees in six years. Yet the classes are widespread, with more than 50 percent of students entering two-year colleges and nearly 20 percent of those entering four-year universities put in at least one remedial course, the report said.

"At the end of the day if we could say that we are getting more students to graduate, particularly those coming into college without the requisite skills, the investment we have now is worth it," said Bruce Vandal, director of postsecondary education for the Denver-based Education Commission of the States, a nonpartisan group that researches education policy. "I think the fact that we aren't getting that result is why legislators and policymakers are up in arms and rightfully so."

The research comes as the cost of a college education continues to grow. The College Board said last fall that the average in-state tuition and fees at four-year public colleges rose an additional $631, or about 8 percent, compared with a year ago. The annual cost of a full credit load has passed $8,000 ? an all-time high.

Legislation passed earlier this month in Kansas prohibits four-year universities from using state funds to provide remedial courses.

Beth Gulley, an associate English professor who teaches remedial writing at the 22,000-student Johnson County Community College in northeast Kansas, acknowledges the remediation statistics are "pretty dismal." But she noted it sometimes takes students longer to graduate than the span of time the statistics track.

"I think there is lots of hope," she said.

Take her assistant Brandon True, who dropped a remedial math class twice before completing it and College Algebra. Now 23, he is taking a calculus-heavy class for aspiring video game designers and preparing to transfer to a four-year institution.

"I was terrified," he recalled of his earlier math struggles. Because of those initial struggles problems, he feels like he truly understands the remedial writing students he helps. "I think they choke. It's scary."

Research shows placement exams routinely misplace students in remedial courses, and colleges would do so far less often if they also examined high school transcripts, said Davis Jenkins, a senior researcher at the Community College Research Center at Teachers College at Columbia University in New York.

True knows the limitations of placement exams firsthand. He went from being identified as needing remedial writing help the first time he took the test to qualifying for the gifted writing program the second time.

The classes are being rethought as well. Jenkins recommends doing away with the one-size-fits-all college algebra requirement and having math classes tailored to a few broad areas of study. For instance, those studying history, law or psychology might take a math class focused more on statistics.

"It just kills their desire for learning," Jenkins said, noting that some students are being placed in classes that make them basically redo middle school pre-algebra. "There really is a stigma, so it is clear that we need to rethink it."

The Complete College America report also says research shows half or more of remedial students would be better off being placed in required classes and having the schools building in extra help, such as tutors or more frequent class meetings.

The report said institutions that have used those approaches have seen their unprepared students succeed at the same rates as their college-ready peers. Legislation passed earlier this month in Connecticut allows underprepared students to take full-credit, college-level courses with built-in supports, such as extended instruction, extra tutoring and mandatory labs.

"We're failing these students if we don't change," said Democratic state Rep. Roberta Willis, co-chairwoman of Joint Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee in Connecticut.

Such an approach worked well for Jessica Grubb, 22, of the Round Rock, Texas, near Austin. After years of struggling, the Texas State University special education major knocked out her math requirement during a summer class that met from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. five days a week. She now works as a math tutor.

"This program has literally changed my life," she said, adding that figuring out a tip at a restaurant used to make her panic. "It gives people a second chance."

PFT: Fairley driving 100 mph before DUI arrest

    120526-football.nbcsports-story-612AP

Sunday?s sports pages from sea to shining sea not only included an Associated Press column regarding gambling on NFL games, but also contained an AP article on the future of youth football.? The item from Chris Jenkins provides an accurate snapshot of the practical consequences flowing from the combination of a generation of helicopter parenting and the advancement of medical knowledge regarding the long-term effects of mild brain trauma.

With or without the concussion lawsuits and the suicides of Dave Duerson and Junior Seau, mothers and fathers would continue to shy away from exposing young children to the more immediate risks of playing football.? If padded youth tackle football will survive over the long term (and, frankly, for kids under the age of 12 I?m not sure that it should), efforts must be made to ensure that coaches will be more responsible.

Plenty of the men who give their time to the coaching of youth football undoubtedly have good intentions and use appropriate methods, placing the well-being of their players over the ?win-at-all-costs? mentality that infects coaches at every stage of the sport.? But some coaches make youth football their own personal NFL, allowing an obsession with victory to cloud common sense and, at times, basic decency.

Forty years ago, youth coaches routinely denied their players water during practice, kicked them in the asses when they were loafing (I still have a cleat mark or two in mine), and corrected alignment errors by pulling them by the facemasks into the right position.? Though the days of football coaches laying hands on kids have long since ended (except for Mike Vanderjagt . . . allegedly), plenty of youth coaches still insist on a ruthless, aggressive approach from boys who should still be boys, in every way.

I?ve witnessed it.? Several years ago, Florio Jr. had soccer practice.? Nearby, a youth football team was padded up.? The coach was barking at kids no older than 10 like they were adults, cajoling them to be ?mean? and ?nasty? and to hit the other team so hard that when they cross paths at the mall during high school the opponents will still feel intimidated by it.

It?s shameful and it?s irresponsible and it needs to end, or youth tackle football eventually will.

And that?s where the NFL?s assumption that changes made at the top of the sport will trickle down could be erroneous.? Pro football coaches are accountable to the league office.? College football coaches answer to the NCAA.? At the high-school level and below, who?s really paying attention to what these coaches say and do?

That?s why it?s critical for efforts like the Lystedt Law to be successful in every state.? Without external bright-line rules regarding concussions, coaches who are largely left to their own devices will continue to be able to do things the way they?ve always been done, regardless of any advancements that are made to protect the grown men who play the game.

At every level below college, the challenge for football will be to adapt to the new expectations of society and parents and players, or to face the fact that players and parents and ultimately society will choose another path.? Though it won?t kill the sport completely, it will make it harder for colleges and NFL teams to identify and develop the best of the best available players.

Thus, every college team and every NFL franchise has a direct interest in finding ways to ensure that the stewards of the youth and high-school versions of the game behave responsibly, prudently, and properly when it comes to ensuring the health and safety of the boys and young men entrusted to them.

Hey, remember TinyPodcast? No? Well, Brian Jarvis and I (Josh Bancroft), two guys who happen to work at Intel, started doing a weekly podcast way back in 2004. Basically, the two of us geeked out about the latest mobile devices, cool software, and technology news and rumors, and recorded it. It was moderately popular, and some people actually complained when it tapered off...Well, we're back! And we're under the Bit Stories banner now. I work for Intel Software Network, and I've had the idea and intention for a while now of doing a show there like Brian and I used to do. Now we're actually doing it.If you haven't listened before, this isn't some professionally produced, slick, marketing message controlled by our corporate overlords. We're just a couple of geeks who love gadgets, phones, computers, the web, and software, talking about whatever's new and cool. We try to make the audio sound good, but it's always going to be a little rough around the edges, and we're OK with that. Sound like something you'd be interested in? Come have a listen. In this show, we talk about the following, in no particular order:The iPhone 3G announcement - its features, whether Brian is finally going to cave in and get one, how AT&T is raising prices on the plans just because they can, how we can't wait to see what comes out of the App Store, and everything else we can think of. We're a little obsessed. :-)Netbooks vs. regular laptops vs. Tablet PCs (with the tangent typing vs handwriting discussion).Where we want to take the show - we don't have grand plans - we pretty much have always played this by ear, but we'd love to hear any ideas or suggestions (or complaints!) you have, so we can keep it interesting. And a whole lot more I can't remember right now!The show is about 38 minutes long (we try to stick to the magic 40 minute length), and weighs about 35MB (it's a 128kbps MP3). You can download the file directly, listen using the streaming player in this post, or (BEST OPTION!!1!) subscribe to the Bit Stories podcast feed in your favorite podcast aggregator (like iTunes). If you subscribe to the feed, you'll get each show delivered automatically as it becomes available - probably once a week or so, with the occasional bonus video or audio segment thrown in for fun. Plus, we'll love you forever if you subscribe. Are you thrilled that the show is back? Mad that we changed something? Think we suck for being gone so long? Just want to say hi? Post a comment, and let us know! Seriously. We crave the validation that your feedback brings. You have no idea how fragile our self esteem really is... ;-) Less

Turning DNA into a hard drive

Silicon-based computers are fine for typing term papers and surfing the Web, but scientists want to make devices that can work on a far smaller scale, recording data within individual cells. One way to do that is to create a microscopic hard drive out of DNA, the molecule that already stores the genetic blueprints of all living things.

Stanford University bioengineer Drew Endy is a pioneer in the field of synthetic biology, which aims to turn the basic building blocks of nature into tools for designing living machines. This week, members of his lab reported in Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences that they had figured out a way to turn DNA into a rewriteable data storage device that can operate within a cell. He spoke with The Times about the research.

    What is synthetic biology?

Synthetic biology is basically a celebration of an engineer's inclination to want to make things using biology. Humans often learn by taking things apart. But an equally powerful way to learn is putting things back together. In synthetic biology, we can begin to put natural biological systems back together at the molecular level to test the understanding of genetics and biology we've accrued over the last 70 years.

So you want to build things using biology ? including, in this case, a way to use DNA to store data?

Yes. We wanted to scope out an area where there are grand challenges in bioengineering, and genetically encoded data storage ? meaning storing information inside living organisms ? fit the bill.

    Why would this be useful?

Say I wanted to put a genetically encoded counter to record cell divisions within every cell of my liver. A USB memory stick simply isn't going to fit in there. And even if I could miniaturize such a device with a future silicon-based manufacturing platform, it would be incredibly difficult to connect up to the biochemistry I'm going to want to record information about.

How does your data storage system work?

We engineered a little sequence of DNA and inserted it onto a chromosome in anE. colibacterium. Then we targeted this DNA with enzymes. Under one set of conditions, one of the enzymes cuts the DNA out from the genome, turns it and reinserts it back into the DNA. It would be as if you took a word in a sentence of text, flipped it upside down and backwards, and pasted it back into the sentence. It would look kind of funny.

Under a different set of conditions, a different set of enzymes finds that backwards DNA, cuts it out, flips it back to the normal orientation and glues the chromosome back together.

We encode a binary digit, or bit, within the DNA by mapping a "0" onto the normal orientation of the DNA and a "1" onto the flipped orientation of the DNA. DNA can only exist in one of two orientations, so it gives us a very nice way to store binary digits.

The key development here was that you were able to flip your DNA switch back and forth, right?

Yes, that hadn't been done before. We thought it would be pretty easy, but it took us three years.

The enzyme that flips from state 0 to state 1 is called the integrase. The enzymes that flip it back are integrase and a controlling protein that modifies its behavior called excisionase. Balancing just the right amounts of the two enzymes in the cells took us 750 attempts.

How might people use a technology like this?

I don't know. What we're working on are ideas to turn into tools that would make it possible to design, build and test things faster, more times or more smartly.

By analogy, the way we got from a room filled by one computer in 1952 to the "cloud" as it exists today was because of investments in tools. We got a lot better at silicon wafer manufacturing. We automated computer design so that human beings didn't have to do it manually. Somebody invested in some programming languages along the way. C++ didn't get discovered under a rock and Java wasn't grown on a tree. You have to work on tools.

But certainly there are ideas for end uses out there.

Sure. My dreams for synthetic biology would include using tools we build to reinvent manufacturing, so that everything now sourced from fossil fuels could be manufactured on a sustainable basis. We could have a much richer partnership with nature. That's quite a big task.

People could use DNA data storage to control processes in sewage treatment plants. If there's a storm and a whole bunch of weird, oil-based runoff from the streets comes into the sewage treatment plant, the system could adapt automatically to better process those oils. You could use biobits in medicine, too. For example, if you wanted to target a tumor inside the body, you might need an engineered immune cell to replicate within the patient ? but you wouldn't want it to replicate too many times, otherwise you'd trigger an autoimmune response.

I'm certain I don't know all the applications.

What's next for your data storage module?

We're trying to scale this up. We want to get from one bit to a byte, which is eight bits. These systems don't need to be very big. If I had eight bits I could count up to 256, and I could start to study the development of an organism from a fertilized egg to a differentiated adult.

Another new dimension in the research is demonstrating that it will be possible to make this work in many organisms. We will support others who are working on that.

What we're likely to end up with will not look like classical electronics. Biology is beginning to teach us how to be a little bit more sophisticated in our engineering designs, which is a lot of fun.

Long Tail Traffic = Higher Success

When it comes to website traffic, one must be extremely creative as well as specific. You want to not only capture the attention of your readers based on your writing abilities and smarts but also by being descriptive. With so many websites similar to yours currently on the web, you really need to do anything you can to stand out from the rest. But, how do you go about doing that successfully?

    Help Them Find You
Let's say your website is about relationships. Off the top of one's head, you may think something like Okay. My keywords for this site are going to be: love, relationships, commitment and so forth. While those words definitely describe your website, being a bit more specific with them is what's going to distinguish you from the competition and help people who are searching for more specific terms find you.

Imagine yourself going to Google and typing in one of those keywords. Can you imagine just how many results are going to pop up? The competition is going to be huge. What you want to do is find long tail keywords (which are keywords that contain at least two words) that decrease the number of competitors you are fighting for traffic against.

    The More Specific, The Better
When considering keywords to use, it's a good idea to consider what makes your website unique from other websites similar to your own. Let's go back to the relationship website example discussed earlier.
There is no way your site is just about relationships. Maybe your site includes helpful tips or tricks for married couples, singles, or a certain age group. See how quickly we have just decreased the amount of search results that would pop up on any given search engine?

    You Can Test It Yourself
To show you what we mean by this, here is a great example: When we typed 'relationships' into the Google search engine, we got 629,000,000 results. When we used a long tail keyword instead ('lasting relationships'), there were only 6,430,000 results. The more specific your keywords, the greater your chances are of getting the traffic you desire.

Have you ever been searching for something online and clicked on result upon result without coming up with anything related to exactly what you were looking for? From there, you typically have to change up your search, making it more descriptive in order to find the information you were in search of.

    Incorporate Keywords Into Your Content
Whenever you are creating keywords, it's important to think about not only your view but also the potential customers' views. If you were someone who needed the information on your site, what kinds of things would you probably type into a search engine to find it?

Incorporating keywords that you think people will use in order to find your website into your content is extremely beneficial to you. On top of that, you want to make sure you update your content often. The more posts you have about your topic available on the web, the greater the chances are of someone running across your site. This doesn't mean you should throw together a bunch of meaningless content(Read How To Create Effective Blog Posts); but you should definitely always be working on the next new addition to your site so you can stay on top of your SEO game. This is why so many people try to do at least a post a week or one a day.

Toronto?s Ford to skip Saskatoon conference

Canada?s civic leaders will meet next week in Saskatoon, but the mayor of the country?s largest city won?t be joining them.

Toronto?s Rob Ford is passing on the annual get-together of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), a chance for roughly 1,600 local politicians to compare notes and rub shoulders with federal ministers and the leaders of opposition parties. There will also be a number of tours highlighting civic projects such as the new police headquarters and River Landing.

It is the first time the conference has been held in Saskatoon.

Ford has skipped the conference every year and as a councillor characterized attending as a waste of taxpayer money.

?I don?t go to FCM,? Ford told reporters Friday in Toronto. ?Since when do I go to FCM??

Saskatoon Mayor Don Atchison challenged Ford earlier this year to attend the conference and join him for a jog along the city riverbank to help the Toronto mayor?s much-publicized weight loss challenge.

Atchison said he had not yet heard officially that Ford would not be in attendance.

?I would hope he would want to see Canada?s fastest-growing city,? Atchison said, noting he has followed the ongoing fight in Toronto over rapid transit pitting proponents of light rail against supporters of a subway expansion. Saskatoon is planning a revamped bus rapid transit system.

?(Mayor Ford) could give us some advice on transit,? Atchison said.

The conference begins Thursday when the big city mayors group ? led by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson ? will hold a meeting focused on a federal infrastructure program and funding for affordable housing. Calgary?s Naheed Nenshi, Ottawa?s Jim Watson, and 91-year-old Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion will be in Saskatoon for the event.

The conference features keynote addresses by NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair, interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, and sessions on the growing cost of policing, using social media, and the pros and cons of cities selling naming and sponsorship rights.

A number of Toronto?s civic politicians are expected, including a councillor to take Ford?s place at the table.

Saskatoon?s council on Monday will be asked to contribute an extra $47,000 to the conference because sponsorship funds fell short. City taxpayers have already contributed $290,000 for the FCM conference and $10,000 for the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) meeting, which begins Monday.

The FCM conference has a total budget of $612,000 with registration covering $203,000 and sponsorship $73,000. Calgary?s council recently set aside $1.4 million to potentially host the conference in 2018.

Now if you are stepping onto a dealership then you think that you may be able to talk your way into the best deal possible and at any dealership for that matter. This is possible, but you really have to be a person with an extremely talented way with words if you are actually going to make this happen and successfully for that matter. No, instead of doing that you are going to want to make sure that you check out the resources that are going to be available online since there are going to many different options that you have available.

The best thing about all of this is that you can know it took absolutely very little to no effort at all for you to just fill out an application. After you have filled out the application you are going to be set up with a dealership in your area that is going to give you the absolute best deal that you need to get a truck loan.

UC Davis mathematicians have helped biologists figure out why platelets, the cells that form blood clots, are the size and shape that they are. Because platelets are important both for healing wounds and in strokes and other conditions, a better understanding of how they form and behave could have wide implications.

"Platelet size has to be very specific for blood clotting," said Alex Mogilner, professor of mathematics, and neurobiology, physiology and behavior at UC Davis and a co-author of the paper, published this week in the journal Nature Communications. "It's a longstanding puzzle in platelet formation, and this is the first quantitative solution."

Mogilner and UC Davis postdoctoral scholars Jie Zhu and Kun-Chun Lee developed a mathematical model of the forces inside the cells that turn into platelets, accurately predicting their final size and shape.

They were collaborating with a team led by Joseph Italiano and Jonathon Thon at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston.

Platelets are made by bone marrow cells called megakaryocytes. They bud off first as large, circular pre-platelets, form into a dumbbell-shaped pro-platelet, then finally divide into a standard-sized, disc-shaped platelet. A typical person has about a trillion platelets in circulation at a time, and makes about 100 billion new platelets a day, each living for 8 to 10 days.

Inside the pre- and pro-platelets is a ring of protein microtubules, which exerts pressure to straighten and broaden the nascent cells. But overlying the ring is a rigid cortex of proteins that prevents the platelets from expanding.

By tweaking the number of microtubules in the bundles, Mogilner, Zhu and Lee found that they could correctly predict how pro-platelets would flip into a dumbbell shape, as well as the size and shape of mature platelets.

    ###

The work grew out of a long-standing collaboration between Mogilner and the Harvard team -- the kind of cross-disciplinary research that makes UC Davis a center for innovation. It was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
