Earnings Preview: Viacom 3Q profit seen up a bit

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Fresh on the heels of a 10-day standoff with DirecTV that analysts say ended in its favor, Viacom Inc. reports its third-quarter earnings on Friday before the market opens. Analysts will be looking for an update from the company about how to reverse declining audience trends at its networks including Nickelodeon.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Many analysts have already given Viacom credit for a bare-knuckle negotiation with DirecTV that resulted in fees from the satellite TV company rising about 20 percent in the first year of a seven-year deal and climbing in the single-digit percentages each year afterward. The deal is worth more than $600 million annually.

Still, investors remain concerned about audience ratings weakness at the owner of MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, VH1 and BET and are hoping a turnaround plan begins to take shape.

Smaller audiences for shows compared to a year ago means that networks have to run commercials more often to reach the same audience promised to advertisers. That decreases the availability of 30-second spots for last-minute ad buys and can cut into revenue.

Citi analyst Jason Bazinet says he expects total ad revenue to decline 4 percent, with slightly more weakness coming from the U.S. market than internationally.

WHY IT MATTERS: New York-based Viacom tends to have its finger on the pulse of pop-culture trends and as such it is a cultural barometer as much as an economic one. Audience declines at children's network Nickelodeon have also raised the question of whether the availability of Nickelodeon shows on Netflix Inc.'s streaming platform has hurt viewership on traditional channels. Viacom sits at the heart of the debate about online video.

WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts polled by FactSet expect adjusted earnings of $1 per share on revenue of $3.49 billion.

LAST YEAR'S QUARTER: Viacom posted adjusted earnings of 99 cents per share on revenue of $3.77 billion.

Bloodstream scavenger inhibits clotting without increased bleeding

ScienceDaily (July 23, 2012) ? A compound that mops up debris of damaged cells from the bloodstream may be the first in a new class of drugs designed to address one of medicine's most difficult challenges -- stopping the formation of blood clots without triggering equally threatening bleeding.

In a mouse study published online July 23, 2012, in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Duke University Medical Center scientists report that the experimental compound called PAMAM G-3 actually prevents activation of the process that leads to the formation of dangerous blood clots, while avoiding any impact on the factors that are essential to normal blood clot formation.

"In the thrombosis (clotting) space, the holy grail has been to make something anti-thrombotic that doesn't significantly increase your chance of hemorrhage or bleeding," said Bruce A. Sullenger, Ph.D., director of the Duke Translational Research Institute and senior author of the study. "We think this is a promising example of a type of compound that could do that. If it can be clinically developed and exhibit the same properties in humans, clearly that would improve safety and outcome of treating patients who have thrombotic disease."

Thrombosis, the formation of blood clots in the circulatory system that form blockages, is a major cause of death in the Western world, contributing to the mortality associated with leading killers such as myocardial infarctions, stroke, and even cancer.

"If you can control thrombosis without greatly increasing hemorrhage or bleeding risk, you would address a major unmet medical need," Sullenger said. "It would have potentially major clinical implications."

The thrombosis study builds upon previous work by Sullenger and his group, which showed that the compounds called nucleic acid-binding polymers or NABPs, which include PAMAM G-3, have potent anti-inflammatory properties. Work published last year by Sullenger's lab demonstrated the polymer's potential to interrupt the inflammatory response that is the hallmark of auto-immune disorders such as lupus and multiple sclerosis.

It had been shown previously that dying and diseased cells spill nucleic acids into the bloodstream at high levels -- rogue bits of DNA and RNA that trigger an inflammatory immune response. Noting that any circulating nucleic acids or inorganic polyphosphates also seem to trigger the coagulation response, the researchers hypothesized that NBAPs might also be effective anti-coagulants. In test tube-based assays and experiments in two mouse models of thrombosis, the NABPs proved to be potent inhibitors of thrombosis without simultaneously triggering abnormal bleeding.

After screening several of the NABPs, which were originally developed for other biomedical applications, the team settled on PAMAM G-3 due to its combination of anticoagulant potency and low toxicity.

"We found that other [NABP] compounds were more toxic, but this particular compound, PAMAM G-3, had been purported to be less toxic in mouse models, so that's why we chose it for our further studies," said Shashank Jain, Ph.D, the study's lead author and a post-doctoral associate at Duke.

The researchers plan further work to better understand how the nucleic acids and polyphosphates are mediating the coagulation response. They will also engineer additional NABP compounds to improve potency, safety and tolerability. And of course they have their sights set on the clinic, but that is a few years away.

"Clearly we want to think about other animal models and then translating it eventually into human studies," Sullenger said. "In a variety of the major diseases, thrombosis is an important clinical problem, and the challenge is always, how do you treat it without causing bleeding problems? If you can address that critical issue, it would be a significant advance."

In addition to Sullenger and Jain, study authors include: George A. Pitoc, Eda K. Holl and Jaewoo Lee of the Duke University Medical Center Department of Surgery', Ying Zhang and Kam W. Leong of the Duke University Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Luke Borst of the Department of Pathology, North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Kate Middleton as cover girl in South Africa?

Interviews Are Terrible

For a business blog, that title sounds somewhat immature. Not exactly the kind of thing you?d expect to read around here, is it? But there?s really no better way to say it, and it is 100% fact. Interviews, specifically job interviews, are simply terrible. The whole process is hugely flawed.

Answer me this. As an interviewer, it?s your job to get a feel for a person?s personality, behavior, work ethic, and experience. How are you supposed to really get a feel for how a potential new co-worker or business partner is going to act once you actually get to work in the span of say?.half an hour? Or an hour? You wouldn?t commit to a romantic relationship after knowing someone for that long. It would be silly. So why would you commit to a business relationship after the same amount of time? What?s worse is from the standpoint of the interviewer, you may potentially have to go through this process dozens of times over the span of days (or if you?re really unlucky, a single day), trying to get a read on every single one. How do you keep them straight? How do you, with this fleeting glimpse of a person and their history, make the best decision for you and your company?

On the other side of that coin, as the interviewee you?re essentially being subjected to an interrogation. You?re forced to sit in a most likely uncomfortable chair while someone you?ve just met picks apart your work history, your personality, anything they can, to try and get a bead on what kind of addition you?ll be to their business. It?s a very uncomfortable situation to be in. It?s no small wonder so many people come out of job interviews saying, ?well, I bombed that.? Can you blame them? This is not an ideal way to try and communicate to someone you?re trying to do business with what you?re all about.

Like I said right up there in the title, interviews are stupid.

Now one would think that, now that you?ve cast of the shackles of the 9-5 world and gone into business for yourself, searching for the biggest piece of PIE you can get your hands on, that interviews would be a thing of the past.

I wish I could say that was true, but unfortunately, that would make me a liar. You may have to interview a prospective new co-worker, a sub-contractor you need to do some work for you, a potential investor, someone who wants to come on-board as an investor, the list goes on and on and on. When it comes to operating a business, you are going to have to interview people.

But do you have to do it the same old flawed way that the 9-5 world does it? If you will pardon my French just this one time, hell no you don?t. Just because you may have to sit down and interview someone, doesn?t mean you have to do it in the traditional way. In fact, that?s a very bad idea. You work for yourself now, it?s time to make up your own rules.

We?ve talked before about making a good first impression and?communicating effectively, and those skills will definitely come into play here. Pulling someone into a room, putting them in a chair, and then picking apart their life? Not a good first impression. Asking a bunch of vague questions that tell you nothing about what a person is really like? Not effective communication.

This is your business, and your money on the line. The old ways of interviewing someone just aren?t going to cut it. Take your time with each interviewee, regardless of the purpose of the interview. Get to know them. Really get a feel for them. Get creative. You?re not bound by thirty minutes and a crib sheet of questions. Do what feels right. Ask what comes to mind organically. While you?re at it, toss the whole ?sitting in a room across a table? format out the window. Meet your interviewee somewhere you can get them to relax and open up a little. A coffee shop is good. A bar, well, you don?t want them to get too comfortable, if you know what I mean. And as your ?interview? (at this point by 9-5 standards it barely qualifies as one) progresses, don?t just listen to what the conversation sparks in your mind. Listen to your instincts. Your intellectual response may be ?yes, this person is perfect?, but your gut might be saying ?no, this person is not the right fit.? If your instinct is leaning in that direction, it just might be right. The reverse is true as well.

The conventional interview is simply not a good way to choose people to join your business, in any capacity. This is your business, your future, and your PIE. Find a better way to find people to help you bake that PIE. A way that works for you, your personality, and your business. Not the old way that we all know is completely and utterly broken.

The first thing we need to learn is that lazy eye, medically known as amblyopia, is the poor vision in an otherwise healthy eye. This disorder develops early on in life, usually around the age of six or so. It is caused by not having good visual transmission from the eye to the brain. The eye is perfectly healthy. It is the cells in part of the brain that deal with vision that are not getting proper stimulation. This disorder generally only happens in one eye, but if gone untreated, both eyes can be affected due to the strain it puts on the other eye. It can also lead to blindness in the eye with the amblyopia. Even though the eye has the ability to see, the brain shuts it off.

The cause of amblyopia can be several things, like trauma to the eye, going with untreated nearsightedness or farsightedness or having untreated crossed eyes. The symptoms of this disorder are generally eyestrain, overall poor vision in the one eye, squinting and/or closing one eye in order to see better. Headaches may formulate as well.

There are different types of treatments that can be done for lazy eye, but it is advisable that treatment be done at a very early age in order for it to do any good. Some of those treatments are vision therapy. That would involve the use of an eye patch to make the eye stronger by covering the unaffected eye. One might also wear corrective lenses if nearsightedness or farsightedness is the cause, or undergo corrective surgery for crossed eyes or vision problems. Also atrophine drops can be used instead of an eye patch, in which case the drops are put in the good eye each day to blur it, forcing the lazy eye to work harder.

The reason why most eye specialists believe that treatment for lazy eye must be done when it is first discovered, is because by the age of ten years old, the child has already gone through what is called the critical stage of vision. After that, being able to help this disorder will be much more limited.

Since Lasik surgery can correct farsightedness and nearsightedness, this would probably lead people to believe Lasik would work for a cure. That is not the case at all. Since the lazy eye has nothing to do with any type of muscle damage, it would make it hard for Lasik to correct this type of problem. As said before, this disorder occurs in the cells that help the brain visualize. If these cells are damaged the brain will not receive the proper signals that it receives to see out of the afflicted eye.

Lasik surgery is a wonderful procedure that a lot of patients have benefited from. Some things it just can not fix. For those that it can, the difference is astounding.

Manhattan Edit Workshop (MEWshop) and theC47 are excited to announce The Filmmakers Intensive (TFMI), an annual two-week program that takes aspiring filmmakers out of their day-to-day environments and allows them to fully immerse themselves in the art and science of making movies. This year?s program is specifically designed to provide each student an intense education in non-fiction filmmaking from some of the best documentarians in the industry.

Co-produced by theC47 and MEWshop, TFMI 2012 will take place in the heart of New York City from August 6th through August 17th. The program will include craft-based training and Master Classes from world-renowned documentary filmmakers such as Chuck Workman, Susan Froemke and David Zieff all of whom have taught for many years and bring an unmatched passion and knowledge of the industry to the classroom.

Led by Jem Schofield, Josh Apter and a team of expert teachers, students will learn shooting, lighting, recording location sound, editing, and more through hands-on instruction in week one of TFMI. In week two, students apply their newly acquired technical expertise and work together to produce and direct their own documentary films, as well as edit and screen their final cuts at the end of the program.

The program also includes practical sessions with master trainers in camera work, scouting locations, pre-production, shooting and conducting interviews, paper editing, and post-production from logging footage to final delivery.

The Filmmakers Intensive is a completely unique program that was designed to give creative people from all over the world the opportunity to learn the process of documentary filmmaking in a completely immersive environment, says Jem Schofield, founder and co-director of The Filmmakers Intensive and TheC47. Its purpose is to help people understand and then apply the principles of directing, cinematography and editing. The instructors are picked not only because of their experience, but because they are great educators. This gives people a chance to go to film school when they may have not had that opportunity in the past.

This is a chance for filmmakers of all shapes and sizes to really plug into the art of storytelling through film, says Josh Apter, founder, Manhattan Edit Workshop and co-director of The Filmmakers Intensive. In just two weeks, students get the real-world filmmaking experience they need to succeed, but in an environment where they can also learn as they go along. Apple gives in to green pressure, calls EPEAT breakup ?a mistake?

Apple made a bit of a whoopsie last week when it withdrew from EPEAT?s green certification program. Now, the MacBook maker is back on board with the environmental organization and is eager to get its seal of approval for Apple products again.

EPEAT stands for Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool. It?s the de facto ratings system for environmentally friendly gadgets, and its seal certifies that products meet certain standards for recycling.

In an open letter posted to Apple?s website, hardware SVP Bob Mansfield wrote, ?Many loyal Apple customers? were disappointed to learn that we had removed our products from the EPEAT rating system. I recognize that this was a mistake. Starting today, all eligible Apple products are back on EPEAT.?

But not all Apple products will be eligible for the rating. Apple products are increasingly difficult to tear down, due to glued-in batteries and glass displays, and as EPEAT CEO Robert Frisbee stated last week, ?If the battery is glued to the case, it means you can?t recycle the case and you can?t recycle the battery.? That was the original issue behind Apple?s withdrawal from EPEAT.

Apple continues to emphasize its own energy efficiency and recycling programs as part of its environmental policy, as well as its efforts to rid its gadgets of toxic materials. Mansfield?s letter stated (somewhat passive-aggressively, we might note) that many of Apple?s green innovations have been in areas as-yet unexplored by EPEAT.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel: DVD Review

?Everything will be alright in the end and if it?s not alright then it is not the end.?

A film by director John Madden and based on the book by Deborah Moggach, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a feel-good, uplifting comedy about making anything possible by taking risks, facing our fears and celebrating the changes in life.

This film has an extensive cast of A list British actors/actresses including Judi Dench as Evelyn a newly widowed pensioner, Bill Nighly and Penelope Wilton as Douglas and Jean who endure a crumbling marriage, Celia Imrie and Ronald Pickup as Madge and Norman who are two singletons, Maggie Smith as Muriel who is a bitter old lady and Tom Wilkinson as Graham who is a high court judge with a secret and not forgetting Dev Patel as Sonny who is the charming Hotel owner.

This group of pensioners decide to retire to India, in particular to the Marigold Hotel which is advertised as for ?the elderly and the beautiful?, as they are struggling to find a comfortable retired life in England and are promised a delightfully picturesque stay in India. However, when they arrive they find that the Hotel is in worse shape than they are and they struggle to find a home in the rubbles. Old relationships seem to unravel as new friendships blossom and the pensioners adapt to the relaxed way of life, spicy food and the locals.

However, despite being set in Jaipur, India, the film seems to focus itself inside the Hotel, rather than amongst the local culture. All that is shown of India are stereotypical images of children playing cricket, a call centre and the manic busy roads. The culture remains unexplored as Bill Nighly talks of a fantastic temple that he visited, yet we never see. Thus, it would seem like this group of pensioners, who as actors/actresses ooze ?Britishness,? adapt to life in India but do not actually indulge in the culture or traditions. Since it is focused on two countries that are intertwined throughout history, it is a shame that more was not done in the film to bring together these two cultures. The film feels as though it is trying to represent the cross cultural relationship between these two countries, but unfortunately all that has come from this are stereotypes.

Despite this, the film is enjoyable, if one can overlook these stereotypes. It is a heart-warming and vibrantly colourful comedy which has some hilariously comic scenes and great performances throughout. This film has a great cast that pulls the narrative together, even though it feels like slightly more could have been achieved with their great talents.

This is a film to watch on one of those rainy days when you need something to lift your spirits.?

Pakistan India Social Media Mela 2012, dubbed as SOCMM12, is organized at Avari Towers Hotel in Karachi on July 13 and 14.
